At U13 level, the A team had narrowly lost their first game of the season against Maidenhead and the boys were therefore keen to give a good account of themselves, notwithstanding the loss to injury of three key strike runners in Oz, Oli R and Matt K. Playing over four quarters, the game was evenly balanced in the first, with Newbury edging at the close to a 5-0 lead. However, continuous pressure from the Blues in the forwards began to create front foot ball and the backs started to exploit the gaps in front of them. The pace and strength of man-of-the-match Arham and of Alex, running from deep, were too much for the visiting team and both ended the game with 3 tries apiece as Newbury exerted pressure until the final whistle, ending up as 60-0 victors. Again, a splendid team effort, with rolling subs and positional changes having no difference on continuity and interaction from 1 to 15, showing that, despite key injuries, we have genuine strength in depth.
