Newbury RFC U14s maintain their unbeaten record
NRFC have taken their season's record to 7 wins and 1 draw following wins over key rivals, Maidenhead and Marlow. Their points haul now stands at 257 – 64.
The U14s travelled to Marlow, one of only three other teams by whom the A team were beaten as U13s. Again, ambition was high. Unfortunately, the week had seen top try scorer, Arham, injured out and a combination of other illness and half term saw us fielding a squad of only 19 against two full Marlow teams. Nevertheless, the boys started well, with strong running from half term returnee, Fraser, most noticeable before he had to retire from the match. Strong pressure saw us leading by 2 tries to 0 by the end of the first quarter. In the second, the home team came out fighting and ran hard at the Blues. A combination of a couple of unfortunate bounces and an uncharacteristic drop in concentration saw Marlow run in 4 unanswered tries. To the boys' immense credit, their heads never went down and they rallied strongly, forcing the pressure at the set piece, with several strikes against the head by Oli B, and in the loose where they started to drive cleanly over the ball to give the half backs time to move the ball through the hands. The result was 6 unanswered tries in the third and fourth quarters, to leave the Blues as victors by a margin of 54-28.
It was a perfect autumnal day for Rugby and many thanks to Marlow for being great hosts. We look forward to playing again at NRFC in December 2016.
