Newbury U14s First BYL Match

After suffering badly last season a decision was taken to play our U14 squad in the second 'B' division of the Berkshire Youth League.

This season kicked off with an away match against a newly formed Abbeyensian team.
Newbury were blessed for once and were able to field their strongest 22 man squad and it soon showed that Newbury for once had the upper hand against a very spirited team. Points very quickly flowed with a great partnership in the forwards and a scintillating back line. It would be unfair to pick out individuals today as the boys combined so well, making things look effortless a times. The first half ended with Newbury leading 47 points to nil, with touch downs coming from, Cameron Golby-Barr, Ben Townsend, Barney Serruya and Lewis Rawlings (aka Big Rocky)and the golden boot of Seb K-C slotting all but one of his conversions.
As the second half started, Newbury simply got back into their stride scoring another 4 tries, Barney Serruya, Cameron Golby-Barr, Sam Telling and Peter Fairnington taking the honours with the conversions coming from Seb K-C, 1, and Fin Roy, 2.

To allow the rest of the squad to gain match play and also to balance the run of play, we substituted en mass. This decision certainly favoured our opponents who fought back with great spirit, a credit to themselves and their coaches, at times having the upper hand but sadly for them fortunately for us, they could not put points on the board in a similar fashion.

Abbeyensians scored a very well deserved consolation try towards the end, only marred by the fact that one of their boys had gone off with what we later found out to be a broken collar bone, we wish him a speedy recovery.

Comedy moment of the day came when both packs were singing Christmas carols whilst scrummaging!!
