Another win!

Newbury travelled to sunny Reading today in their second outing of the Berkshire Youth League. It was clear from the very start before the first whistle had been blown, that Newbury would appear to have the upper hand. Our head coach offered our opponents the opportunity to bolster their squad, they valiantly declined the offer.

Having won the toss, Reading kicked off and Newbury were straight into their flowing back moves, with the first touch down coming within minutes. Cameron Golby Barr taking the first points and Seb Kennedy-Compston duly converting. As the clock ticked away, Newbury simply added more and more points to the table with Cameron scoring again, George Biggs, Barney Serruya taking one apiece and Max Clementson touching down twice. Seb Kennedy-Compston slotted all but one of his conversions.

Reading remained resilient and were duly rewarded with a consolation try in the first half. The score being 5-40 when they went to half time.

In the second half Newbury substituted players and swapped positions to try and give their opposition a fighting chance and indeed Reading were at times showing the upper hand in flashes, but alas all their hard work was not rewarded by points. Newbury, however, scored a further five tries, Sam Telling, Barney Serruya, Will Davidson, George Biggs and Zachary Timms all taking one apiece. Conversions were taken by Seb Kennedy-Compston and Finn Roy, each gaining one conversion apiece.

Of course it would be unfair not to give praise to the guys up front who provided a platform from which the backs could work!

Thus the final score ended at 5-69 to Newbury. The match was slightly marred by an injury to Max Clementson, which appeared hopefully only to be superficial, worryingly Sam Bowers from Reading RFC suffered a back injury and as I left Reading he was still in the ambulance, pitch side. Our thoughts are with him and a speedy recovery.

STOP PRESS: Sam is home from treatment, no lasting damage to bones or ligaments, good news!!
