A much tougher test

Newbury faced old foes Bracknell this morning at a very windy Monks Lane. From the kick-off it was clear for all to see the Newbury boys were half asleep. Discipline at the rucks was very poor and after giving away 9 penalties in a row,the coaches were worried a yellow card would soon be waved. Luckily this wasn't the case and Newbury soon got into their scoring ways with a first touchdown from Max Clementson, but in the swirling winds Seb Kennedy-Compston was unlucky with his conversion.

The second try came from a quick thinking Olly Harris who snatched up a loose ball from the ground to touch it down. This time Seb Kennedy-Compston found his accuracy to convert.

Bracknell soon turned the tide in possession and it looked very much like Newbury were going to be on the back foot and indeed this was confirmed with a score from Bracknell, which unfortunately was not converted.

Bracknell continued to pile on the pressure, but fortunately the rugby gods were smiling on the Newbury boys and they were unable to score. First half over.

After a stern talking to at half time the starting 15 knew exactly what they had to do to win the praise of their Head Coach, and it wasn't long before they were rewarded with a touchdown by George Biggs. This was the beginning of a run of play where Newbury went on to score - Rhys Thomas making a solo run of some 50 metres to touch down, Seb Kennedy-Compston's boot let him down again in the horrendous windy conditions.

Although Bracknell continued to be stronger at the breakdown often turning over Newbury ball, Newbury went on to score again with Max Clementson claiming his second of the day with Seb Kennedy-Compston converting. Despite Bracknell continued pressure on Newbury, they were unfortunate not to score and suffered several knocks to players, who had to leave the pitch.

Barney Serruya in his usual pick and go style drove over to score twice, both converted by Seb Kennedy-Compston. Therefore Newbury took their third Berkshire Youth League win in succession.

Man of the Match - Olly Fidler winner of yet another Mars Bar.

The final score - Newbury 43 - 5 Bracknell
