A brilliant day all round for all the boys

On Sunday 16th March, Newbury U7s entered the Reading Abbey Mini Rugby festival We entered 2 squads of 8 & 9 players. The festival played in a pool system where each squad split into 2 teams of four and played matches simultaneously. The aggregate score from both matches was taken to determine the result.

Each team played four matches against teams from Bracknell, Reading Abbey, Readingensians & Wallingford. Only one of our teams had a substitute so the boys had a real physical challenge! However in the glorious sunshine our boys played their hearts out. They played with real teamwork, each working hard to support each other in attack and cover all holes in defence. They scored hatfuls of tries and either won their matches or only narrowly lost. The overall result was that we finished 3rd, on equal points as 2nd place Reading Abbey, but Abbey took 2nd place as they had scored 2 more tries than us!

The boys had a fantastic time. There were big grins all day and lots of mischievous laughing. Our squad is shaping up to be a great group and the boys seem to be making firm friends.

A big thank you goes out to the parents for all your help today, putting up and putting away the tent and running impromptu games to keep the boys occupied, but also for the vocal support from the sidelines which I know spurred the boys on!
