It is with great sadness that I have been informed of the passing of Life Member, Chet Hobbs.

Chet had been suffering from dementia for some time and on Sunday, at the age of 91, he peacefully succumbed to the illness while in the care of The Argyles nursing home.
Alongside his friends Tony Boyer, Gordon Wickens (the Wickens Suite), and Terry Langdon (the Langdon Lounge), Chet served NRFC as Hon Sec, Committee member and social organiser. He has some 60 years of support for the Blues behind him.

In the old Pinchington Lane clubhouse, Newbury RFC was as well know for its after match bacon rolls as the teams prowess on the pitch. Teams would eagerly await the arrival of Chet’s wife Joan with the hot bacon rolls. Chet would entertain the visiting Committee members.

Although not a rugby player himself, Chet typified the power of rugby to cement friendships and lifelong camaraderie. He was an Old Newburian (St Bart’s School) and was a key person in establishing an Old Newburians RFC Sunday team as well as being a regular face on the annual Old Boys match photo’s.

Many past players and friends will have special memories of Chet and we will take a moment to silently recall them before the match on Saturday.

Trevor Coles
President NRFC
