Newbury U11s had their first experience of the Defender Premiership Cup on Sunday when they joined 24 other Teams at Northampton Saints, Franklins Gardens.
Newbury were drawn in a group with 5 other Teams such as Milton Keynes, Bedford Blues and Aylesbury. The standard was high and really tested The Blues, but they performed magnificently and managed 4 wins and 1 draw.
Coach Andy Hurley said that the players were amazing, and he couldn’t have asked for anything more from them, they played some great rugby and had to front up in the physical battle against some tough opposition.
Once the Festival had finished, the players were treated to the exciting opening Premiership encounter between Northampton Saints and Exeter Chiefs, which couldn’t have finished any closer with a 33 all draw!
At half time all the festival players got to do a lap of the pitch in front of the fans and received a very warm reception. After the match had finished it was time for the Newbury players to get photos and signatures from many of their hero’s.
To top off a fantastic and memorable day, coach Andy Hurley was presented with the Northampton Rugby Spirit Award, which recognises community work in rugby.
The U11’s are hoping to play in the Gloucester round of the Defender Cup which takes place in December.
