Double Wins For Women At The Weekend

Alastair Gray

Newbury Women 48 - Bath Ladies United 0 Newbury Women II 83 - Marlow Ladies 5 Match reports by Kat Smith

A double header at home on Sunday provided two great wins for Newbury in their Women’s section.

The 1st XV kept a clean sheet against Bath United as they gain momentum into this season building on their last two wins.

Newbury’s first try would come from fullback, Alex Knight who cleared up a kick from Bath in the back field, reorganise with ball moving into contact until the space was created out wide where she positioned herself on the wing and took the final offload and crashed through the defence to give the Blues their first five points.

Despite finding themselves in their own half, Newbury cleanly won ball at the line-out and attacked through the middle with a central crash ball. It would be “Forward of the match”, April Harding, who would break the defence and with tacklers hanging off her, she offloaded out the side to Ellen Thornton who rapidly covered over half the pitch, weaving around defenders to increase Newbury’s score again.

Despite raking up the scores, Newbury were playing at a frantic speed and paired with the wind there would be a multitude of knock-ons resulting in scrums for both teams.
These opportunities gave Newbury another platform to showcase their scrum strength and dominance as they not only won their own put in but repeatedly stole possession as they ran over Bath’s forward pack.

From these platforms, Newbury were able to continue to have possession and cross the try line to build the score to 24-0 at half time.

Even with substitutions after half time, the Blues continued in their rhythm and with a level of control gained, they would fly another four tries through Bath’s defence in the second half. Two of these would come from Ellen Thornton again giving her a hattrick in the game.

The game finished with a full-time score of 48-0 to Newbury putting them currently top of the league table.

A strong scrum from the forward pack saw a strong foundation for the backs to play heads up rugby, executed with fantastic handling skills and support runs from the entire team. Newbury maintained possession for a large portion of the game, with Marlow showing spirited moments of play throughout the game.

Receiving from the kick off, the Blues set their intent swiftly, a strong run from fullback Inas Sillence saw their first try within the first 5 minutes setting the tone for the rest of the game.

The game saw 13 tries from; Inas Sillence, Roisin Winton, Oli Johnson, Annemarie Tilley, Lauren Price-Richards, Maisie Litchfield, Beth Roch and a hattrick from Fanny Fouin, with expertly kicked conversions from Oli Johnson.
