James, a Devon boy, was born and brought up in Torquay and from 2006-2009 attended South Devon College in Paignton. On leaving College James enlisted in the RAF and a first posting to Brize Norton saw him undertake training to become a People Ops Specialist, a role he continues to hold. It is now sixteen years since he joined the RAF and he is currently based at High Wycombe. James has played rugby for many years and captains the RAF Vets team. He has also played for Torquay, Swindon and continues to play for the RAF and on one occasion played against the Welsh Prison Service at Cardiff Arms Park for the RAF.

He comes to Newbury after an initial conversation with James and Sarah and says, “the club’s massive ambition made this an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.” He holds a Level Two England Coaching Award, has undertaken an RFU Headcase Concussion programme, has attended various other courses including one relating to Tackle Safe and another on the Principles of Lineouts. He is currently coach of the RAF under 23 forwards and is proud of their 2025 victory in the inter services championship against the Navy and the Army.

James is looking forward to working with Will Reeve, James McAvoy and the whole playing squad and he would like to build a dominant forwards pack this season that other teams will find difficulty competing against to allow the backs to play their expansive rugby. Reflecting on some of the dominant forward displays of last season this is exciting to hear and James will start his work with what is already a very cohesive and skilful pack of forwards who dominated a lot of opposition packs last season. Working with Will and Macca, James hopes to build a team who are competing at the top end of the table. And in terms of Monks Lane, James says, “my first impressions of the club are the obvious things you see when you come to Monks Lane – excellent facilities with welcoming staff. As I look out onto the paddock, I’m excited to get the new season underway #COYB.”
