Newbury Women 31 - 31 Guildford Gazelles Ladies Match Report - Kat Smith

The final game of the season for Newbury saw them host Guildford on Sunday.

The game was packed with action with ten tries scored in total and the game finishing as a nail-biting draw, 31-31.

It was Newbury who took command of the first half with their attack looking relentless.
The first ten minutes saw two tries from prop, Catrin Owen and one from captain and centre, Lizzie Harris.

Guildford finally got an attacking opportunity and utilised the opportunity to display their ability to keep ball live and identify space. They were rewarded with three tries of their own before the half was out.

The second half saw a heavy defence set for the Blues as Guildford gained advantage from many referee decisions at the ruck. The fast pace of play put Newbury on the defensive back foot and despite the hard hitting tackles the Blues found themselves fighting to get out of their 22 at times.

For a final time this season, Newbury’s forwards showed off their scrummaging prowess despite a powerful pack from Guildford. Whether it was applying pressure in defensive scrums or winning ball in their own the Blues fought up front and then converted their hard work with two further tries from the front row, April Harding and River Lewis.

The game was drawing to a close but Guildford were not going to finish without a fight.
They finished the half as they did the first. Hard carries and run away tries brought the score 31-31 with final play.

Newbury had ball in hand but unfortunately could not gain any points from this and the game ended in a draw.

Despite this result the Blues were full of celebration due to the confirmation that the 2nd XV were league winners and would be promoted to NC3.

The celebrations continued on and off the pitch, bringing an eventful 2025/26 season to a close.
