“It’s an absolute honour.” The words of Ivan Sliwinski on his appointment as Club President. He follows in the footsteps of three immediate past Presidents with whom he played when the club was at Pinchington Lane. A local lad, Ivan was born in Marlborough, spent a few early years in Ramsbury and moved to Newbury with his family in 1964. He has lived in Newbury since then. He attended Park House where his rugby teacher was Derek Eggbeer, who himself played for Newbury for several years. Ivan played for the school team through the age groups and started at the club as a Colt in 1973, being selected as full back for Berkshire Colts and then the Southern Counties Colts. Nineteen years later he played his last game for the club as part of the Faded Blues Vets team. In between he played a number of games for Blues, captaining the first fifteen for two seasons. His last game as a first team player was in the 1987 Berkshire County cup final against Maidenhead. Injuries in subsequent seasons when playing for Stags and the Vets resulted in Ivan retiring from playing and becoming involved in coaching at the club, where he was involved in coaching all age groups from under 11 to the Colts.

Ivan says he was encouraged to become President and after some persuasion decided to take on the role, one which is so very important for the club, representing us at various functions, hosting visiting teams as well as travelling to away matches to represent the club. He sees the role very much as a figurehead figure rather than being involved in executive decision making, although the committee and trustees would do well to take advantage of his wise council, having been involved with the club for his whole adult life. Ivan has a strong passion for Blues and everything it represents and has been a regular attendee at many matches over the years, also enjoying pre lunch matches with former team mates, which he says is simply fantastic. He has already joined the walking rugby group during their annual awards evening, presenting the players’ player award. He hopes to meet and get to know as many people as possible during his tenure and will be around at most Blues matches for a chat.

So, Ivan, many congratulations on your appointment. There is no questioning your commitment to the club and your desire to keep as many young people involved in playing at Monks Lane. I am sure everyone will want to wish you all the very best for your time as our President.
