A strong Newbury 2nd XV faced a travelling Camberley on Sunday.

The Blues took an early lead as they received possession from kick off. River Lewis set up a controlled forward pod and this allowed fly half, Oli Johnson to align the backs and release Anna Krzyżanowska to speed around the outside of the Camberley defence for Newbury’s first try.

This initial advancement from Newbury set the tone of the game as further tries were scored by Roisin Winston after a stolen ball at the line out leading to creating space on the opposite wing and another by Lizzie Harris who utilised a clean and sharp dummy against an overlap.

Camberley kept up the defensive pressure but the Blues’ attack was too much from open play as Jenny Buckley cleaned up a loose kick that Camberley placed down field trying to gain distance from their line out. The attacking run from the full back was too strong to defend against and Newbury increased their lead to 21-0.
Increasing the pressure on the home side, Camberley forced a defensive kick from Newbury after receipt of the kick off. Camberley retained possession as they slowly encroached towards Newbury’s half and a penalty kick increased this attacking movement and gave Camberley possession at the line out.

A well-executed mauling lineout from Camberley provided space for their crash 12 to carry through the Newbury defence. When the Blues tackle was nearing an overhead offload was made to secure the forward motion of the Camberley possession and they were able to complete on the try to give the away team their important 5 points.

Newbury came off the line for the second half in much the same manner as the first. The aggression in attack provided a knock on from Camberley and the competent Newbury scrum continued to secure stable possession as Leah Bertram at 8 gained great length from a carry at the base of the scrum. This provided plenty of time for the remaining forwards to reset and be ready to carry the next phases of play into contact moving the Blues closer and closer towards the try line. Although close, a penalty against Camberley gave Newbury a more controlled option to look wider and ship the ball out to the safe hands of Anna Krzyżanowska to touch down for another try.

This lead from Newbury did not allow them to become complacent and they continued to apply pressure on the travelling opposition.
A stolen ball from Lizzie Harris found Laura Hewett on the wing who smashed her way through the yellow and black to allow the Newbury back line to set up again and Oli Johnson released Anna Krzyżanowska for a third.

Camberley were looking strong in attack despite the tries against them but an unfortunate pass in front of the notorious Anna Krzyżanowska was a misjudgement as she collected the perfect intercept and ran in yet another try for the home team.

The game finished 57-5 to Newbury as they returned to their winning ways.
