Newbury Blues entertained a Winchester squad at Monks Lane in the final pre-season warm up game

Blues have a big squad for this last pre-season game and have different 15’s for each quarter last chance for players to make a statement to the coaches ready for the first league game on 3rd Sept at Reading Abbey
Winchester kick off the first quarter and force Blues to concede an early penalty, which is kicked just too far rolling over the try line and out, Blues kick is returned Blues take and a good kick and chase takes play into Winchester’s half and gives Blues a scrum. Winchester steal the ball and get back to Blues 22 before a Jamie Futcher tackle halts their progress and they knock on, Blues play the advantage and a good Toby Pearce run takes play back into Winchester’s half. Again a mistake gives Winchester the ball and they keep Blues in their own half for the next few minutes, again a big tackle from Toby Pearce turns the ball over and Blues get up to Winchester’s 22 with some good running rugby from Ryan Davis and Alex Millar. Blues eventually lose the ball allowing Winchester to kick clear; both sides are putting in some big tackles, the kick is taken by Jamie Futcher who makes ground before releasing Rory Jones who steps through several tackles taking play into Winchester’s 22 he slips a pass to Toby Thorne who scores the first try the drop kick conversion just wide 5-0
Winchester restart and after a few minutes the whistle is blown to end the first period

Blues make lots of changes for this second period, Winchester attack straight from the restart and win a lineout in Blues 22, their forwards take the ball up to the line and eventually they break through the Blues defence to score and kick the conversion 5-7
Winchester have the best of the next 10 or so minutes and keep the Blues defence under long periods of pressure, Blues defence holds out and manages to steal the ball and run out of their 22, Anthony Hackett makes a great run getting nearly to the try line before he is stopped, Blues support is quickly there and the ball is recycled quickly allowing Toby Thorne to break the defence to score under the posts, Jamie Futcher converting 12-7

Again Blues make lots of changes for the third quarter, Newbury kick off and put Winchester under pressure and manage to steal the ball, Blues attack the Winchester defence and get into the 22. The forwards keep the ball and after several phases Ben O’Shea breaks through the defence to scores 17-7
Winchester attack from the restart getting into Blues 22 and put the Blues defence under a period of pressure, Blues defence manages to hold out and get possession, Josh Love and Rory Jones making good runs taking play up to Winchesters 22, Blues cough up possession allowing Winchester to kick out of defence. Blues win a lineout and mount another attack getting into Winchesters 22, the ball is fed quickly through the backs allowing Anthony Hackett to score 22-7

Again Newbury ring the changes for the final quarter, Winchester kick off Blues take and immediately set off in attack, after several phases they are in Winchester’s 22 Dylan Stewart gets the ball and sidesteps the defender to score 27-7
Blues launch another attack straight from the restart, Rory Jones making a good run, Winchester get the ball back when Blues knock on, Winchester kick out of defence again Blues run the ball and a good Toby Pearce run ends when Blues get shoved into touch.
Blues get a scrum at the lineout, scrum won Blues spread the ball quickly through hands Alex Millar, to Sparks who makes ground before slipping an inside pass to Josh Love who releases Joe Pigott to score, Josh Love winning the crossbar challenge when his conversion bounces off the crossbar and over, 34-7
Blues now have the better of the game the smaller Winchester squad getting tired; Blues attack straight from the restart and are soon further in front when Kyle Doel scores, making the final score 39-7
Blues due to the large squad have been able to make numerous interchanges during each quarter, which gives them the advantage over the smaller Winchester squad in the last two quarters
