Newbury Blues come good in the end to win a tight game 2 scores in the final 10 mins secure the victory

Newbury Blues entertain Havant at Monks Lane for their final warm up game before the first league game at Bournemouth on Sat 2nd September and just get the win when they manage to score twice in the final 10 minutes of an evenly fought game

Havant kick off the game and get the ball when Blues knock on, Blues turn over the scrum when Havant knock on, both teams show they want to attack in the opening 5 mins but mistakes halt their progress, Blues are first to put points on the board when Ryan Trevaskis kicks a long penalty on 7 mins 3-0

Havant take the restart kick and manage to get their hands on the ball, they attack getting into Blues 22 but lose the ball allowing Blues to kick clear. Havant take a quick lineout and are soon again in Blues 22 this time they win a penalty then a scrum, from the scrum Havant attack and manage to break through the Blues defence to score 3-7 12 mins

Blues win a scrum from their restart kick and get up to Havant’s try line but are unable turn pressure into points and knock on, Havant manage to win the scrum and kick clear, Blues again attack but get penalised 5m out, Havant kick clear. Lineout won Havant again put Blues under pressure and look the most likely to score, Blues earn a yellow card for a deliberate knock on. Havant are now playing the better rugby and spend long periods camped in Blues territory but are unable to make the pressure count until they win a penalty which is kicked to touch, lineout won they run at Blues and manager to run round Blues defence to score wide out on the left 3-12 33 mins

The remainder of the half remains scoreless with Havant just having the better of the play

Blues kick off the second half and have soon reduced the deficit when they get into Havant’s 22 and Joe Pigott manages to dart over to score 8-12 42 mins

Again for the next 20 or so minutes both sides have chances to score but good defence and mistakes prevents any additions to the scores. Blues are first to make the breakthrough when from a penalty kick they win the lineout but lose possession deep in Havant’s half, Havant kick clear but Blues gather and a good cross field kick from Ryan Trevaskis is gathered by Josh Love who is gone and over to score, Ryan Trevaskis converts, 15-12 61 mins

Blues are now playing the better rugby and after 8 mins have added a penalty to lead 18-12

Havant manage to regain the ball from their kick and put pressure on Blues defence, after several phase’s their 14 who is the quickest player on the pitch has dodged the Blues defenders to score close to the posts, the conversion adds the 2 points and they are back in the lead 18-19 74 mins

Blues are soon back in the lead when they are rewarded for some good play with a penalty which Ryan Trevaskis kicks 21-19 76 mins

Havant again get the ball from their restart kick but lose the ball in Blues 22, Blues run the ball from their own half and after several phase’s they spread the ball wide allowing Grant Broom-Edwards to make the last 15m to score wide out on the left, Ryan Trevaskis kicks the long conversion and the final whistle is blown 28-19

A good warm up game prior to the 1st league game away to Bournemouth on 2nd Sept 3pm KO
