their first defeat

Saturday 10th October 2015, South West 1 East League

Newbury travelled to the newly promoted in-form Salisbury and lose their first game in the final minutes

Salisbury kick off down the slope and manage to regain possession, spreading the ball across the field their backs make good ground getting up to Blues 22, they win a penalty but play advantage, as no progress is made the ref brings play back and Salisbury kick the penalty to touch on Blues 5m line.
Lineout won Salisbury keep up the pressure the forwards taking play up to the line before passing the ball out to the backs who take play across the width of the field then back before an interception by Jamie Futcher halts their progress, Blues Ryan Trevaskis kicking out of defence and safely into touch. Salisbury mount another attack from the lineout again taking play across the pitch and well into Blues 22 through several phase’s of play but Blues manage to turn over the ball then win a penalty which is kicked to touch, lineout won Blues run the ball before a nice kick rolls into touch well in Salisbury territory, Salisbury win the lineout but Blues quickly hold them and Salisbury are shoved into touch on their own 22 line.
Salisbury win the lineout and run out of defence but don’t get far before they are again ushered into touch by good Newbury defence, Newbury lineout on the 30m mark which they win and put up a high kick, Salisbury take and a great kick rolls into touch on Blues 5m line.
Newbury hold their lineout and kick up field, Salisbury gather and counter attack but lose the ball allowing Blues to hack up field, the chase is good but Salisbury manage to get there first and run the ball through the backs before a loose pass is intercepted by Joe Pigott.
Blues are penalised for holding on allowing Salisbury to kick to touch, from the line out they keep up the pressure getting within 5 m of the try line before Newbury’s defence are awarded a penalty allowing them to kick out of defence and in to touch. Newbury win their lineout and run the ball but don’t get far before Salisbury turn over possession and immediately launch a counter attack passing through the backs, a great line is taken allowing them to break the Blues defence to score close to the posts, the conversion is successful making the score 7-0 13 min’s

The Newbury restart is taken by Salisbury and they put up a high kick, which the Blues knock on giving Salisbury as scrum in Blues half, scrum won Salisbury run the ball but a knock on gives the Blues the ball, Blues play the advantage and run back at Salisbury winning a penalty, the long kick doesn’t make touch allowing Salisbury to run the ball. Newbury are up quick and a good Steve Denner tackle forces Salisbury to cough up possession, Blues run the ball and a good run from Andy Herriott back at his old club forces Salisbury to concede a penalty which is kicked to touch.
Blues lose their lineout but get possession when Salisbury knock on, Blues run the ball but don’t get far before they knock on giving Salisbury a scrum on their own 30m line, scrum won a loose pass rolls into touch giving Blues a lineout, Blues win their lineout and run the ball Joe Pigott, Ryan Davis, Dan Thorne, and Josh Bartlett making good ground but the Salisbury defence holds firm and win a penalty, a scoring chance missed by the Blues. Salisbury kick out of defence and into touch, lineout won Salisbury first drive up field with their forwards then get into Blue’s 22 with their backs running wide, Salisbury keep up the pressure and manage to score wide out on the right 12-0, 23 mins

Blues restart is gathered by Salisbury who kick long, Blues gather and run Josh Winfield, Josh Bartlett and Joe Pigott making good ground before a knock on halts their progress. Salisbury win their scrum but don’t get far before Blues manage to steal the ball and run passing the ball through hands Jamie Futcher being held up 2m short, the Salisbury defence win the penalty for holding on, the long kick doesn’t make touch allowing Blues to gather and kick back, Salisbury take a put a long kick into Blues 22, the chase is good and Blues concede a penalty at the tackle which Salisbury kick 15-0, 30 mins

Salisbury gather Newbury’s restart and their forwards rumble up field and win a penalty, the kick doesn’t reach touch allowing Blues to run back good yards being made by forwards Josh Winfield, Josh Love, Kyle Doel and Duncan Craigen, getting Blues into Salisbury’s 22 before the ball is spread wide through Ryan Trevaskis, Tom Sanders to Dan Thorne who breaks the Salisbury defensive line to score close to the posts Ryan Trevaskis converting 15-7 33 mins

Salisbury’s re-start is knocked on by the Blues giving Salisbury possession, they play the advantage but a loose pass rolls into touch. Blues win their lineout just in their own half and run the ball through Josh Winfield, Dan Thorne, Andy Herriott and Jamie Futcher getting into Salisbury’s 22 before Salisbury tackling forces play into touch. Blues steal the lineout getting up to the try line but they cannot get the ball down and the Salisbury defence wins a penalty when Blues go over the top in the tackle, Salisbury kick to touch, win the lineout allowing their forwards to maul up field then pick and drive getting up to Blues 22 before being halted, a bit of a stupidity erupts which gains both Salisbury and Newbury a yellow card, both players are then given a red when the dispute carries on off the field.
The Newbury penalty doesn’t make touch allowing Salisbury to return the kick which rolls nicely into touch on Blues 22, Blues win the lineout then a penalty which is kicked to touch and the half time whistle is blown.

Newbury kick off the second half and a good chase is rewarded with a penalty then 10 more yards go Blues way for back chat, the long kick just slides past the posts, Salisbury take the 22 drop out long, Blues gather and put up a high kick Salisbury gather but lose the ball, Blues attack spreading the ball through the hands allowing Josh Love to crash through the Salisbury defence to score, Ryan Trevaskis converting 15-14 44 min’s

Salisbury’s restart is taken by Blues Kyle Doel who runs the ball back at Salisbury winning a penalty which is kicked into touch, Blues win the lineout well in Salisbury’s half and the forwards pick and drive, progress is slow the ball is put back to Ryan Trevaskis who kicks a great long drop goal, 15-17 49 min’s

Salisbury’s restart is gathered by Blues but they give away a scrum for a knock on, scrum won Salisbury get into Blues 22 but are penalised for crossing, Newbury win the scrum then a penalty, the kick doesn’t make touch, Salisbury take and kick but the kick is straight in touch taking play back. Graham Stewart on for Duncan Craigen. Salisbury steal Blues lineout and run the ball through several missed tackles getting up to Blues 22, Jamie Futcher tackles and Blues get a penalty which is kicked to touch, lineout won Blues run the ball but concede a penalty which Salisbury kick to touch. Salisbury win their lineout getting into Blues 22 wide out before winning a penalty which they again kick to touch Newbury getting a team yellow for the infringement, Blues win a penalty at the lineout the long kick not making touch, Salisbury run the ball back but Blues manage to hold them up and win a penalty scrum on half way.
Blues win the scrum and run the ball through the backs getting well into Salisbury territory and win a penalty the long attempt just wide, Salisbury take the 22 drop out Blues gather and chip over the Salisbury defence, Salisbury take and run the ball getting into Blues 22 before Newbury manage to steal the ball but the defensive kick is charged down, Blues manage to reach it first and touch it down in the dead ball area. Blues take the 22-drop out Salisbury gather and kick high, Blues gather and kick long, the chase is good and Blues win a scrum on Salisbury 22, Blues win the scrum but don’t get far before they are penalised for holding on. Salisbury kick to touch; win the lineout in their own half letting their forwards drive up field before they release the ball to their backs who get well into Blues half before a chip kick goes straight into touch giving Blues a lineout on half way.
Lineout won Blues concede a penalty for not releasing the ball in the tackle, Salisbury kick to touch win the lineout and run the ball at the Blues defence then spread the ball wide getting over the try line to touch down but the final pass was ruled forwards giving Blues a 5m defensive scrum. Play is held up for a neck/head injury to Blues Tom Sanders who has to leave the field Josh Love coming on
Blues win the scrum and kick to touch stays in play, Salisbury are quick to gather and run back but knock on, Blues win the scrum but give away a penalty in midfield 30 m out which Salisbury kick through the posts, 18-17, 70 mins

Newbury restart and a good chase means they get their hands on the ball and spread it wide across the pitch but get shoved into touch, Salisbury hold their lineout just outside their 22 put concede a penalty which Blues Ryan Trevaskis kicks 18-20 73 min’s

Salisbury’s restart is taken by Blues and kicked back into Salisbury’s half who gather and return the kick into Blues 22, Joe Pigott calling the mark, he taps and sends the ball back to Ryan Trevaskis to kick to touch around half way, Salisbury win the lineout but knock on giving Blues a scrum, scrum won Blues attack but a mistimed pass is intercepted by Salisbury’s 8 who charges up field sending a grubber kick into Blues 22, Josh Love wins the race and gathers the ball allowing Blues to kick to touch. Salisbury win the lineout and spread the ball wide missing scoring when instead of the final pass the tackle is taken, Salisbury manage to recycle and several phases later they manage to get over to score the decisive try wide out on the right with only minutes left, 23-20, 78 mins

Newbury restart and win a lineout when a Salisbury hand touches the ball before it crosses the touchline, Blues win the lineout and mount one final attack but a knock on ends their progress and brings the final whistle and Blues first defeat.
