Ryan Trevaskis kicks Newbury back to winning ways with a hard fought win over Leighton Buzzard

Newbury entertained Leighton Buzzard on the first wet Saturday afternoon game this season.

Blues start this game with several regular 1st team players unavailable due to having tickets for the world cup semi final or injury etc, this gives three players their first 1st team games this season, Paul Sayers, Tom Bass, Nicholas Packham

The weather is not going to help an open flowing game as it is a rainy wet afternoon

Leighton Buzzard kick off Blues knock on under pressure from the Buzzards chasers giving them a scrum 30 m out, Blues forwards manage to shove the Buzzards pack backwards and win a penalty which is kicked to touch 5m in Buzzards half. Blues win the lineout and run the ball getting up to Buzzards 22 but are penalised for crossing, Buzzards clear to touch, Blues win a penalty at the lineout which is kicked to touch, lineout won Blues attack but are shoved into touch.
Buzzards win their lineout and put a good kick into Blues half which rolls into touch just in Blues 22, Blues win the lineout and Ryan Trevaskis clears with a great defensive kick, ref has blown for a penalty so Blues kick again and have the lineout, lineout is won but a forward pass gives Buzzards a scrum on half way. Scrum won Buzzards run the ball, this time they make a mistake a knock on giving Blues a scrum still on half way, Blues win the scrum allowing Josh Winfield to break getting just inside the 40m line before being stopped, the Blues support is quickly there and win a penalty when Buzzards infringe, Ryan Trevaskis steps up and slots the long penalty through the posts 3-0, 8 mins

Buzzards are quick to reply and attack the restart which results in them regaining possession quickly followed by a penalty which they kick 3-3, 10 min’s

Blues restart is taken by Buzzards who attack through several phases of play getting up to Blues 22 and winning a scrum, Newbury manage to steal the scrum but knock on, Buzzards win this scrum and attack but good Blues defence drives them backwards and then gets a penalty which is kicked to touch. Blues win the lineout and run the ball but give away a penalty at the tackle allowing Buzzards to clear up field, the penalty doesn’t reach touch but the Blues kick is sliced straight out giving Buzzards a lineout in Blues half.
Buzzards win the lineout but cough up possession allowing Blues to run the ball but again Blues infringe at the break down allowing Buzzards to find touch just outside Blues 22 with the penalty kick, Buzzards forwards win the lineout and maul into Blues 22 before they lose the ball. Blues run the ball but don’t get out of their own half before they concede another penalty, Buzzards are just short with the long penalty attempt, Blues take and kick out of defence, Buzzards gather and chip over the Blues defence, Blues manage to get to the ball first and kick long into Buzzards half which they knock on.
Blues win the scrum and run the ball, Buzzards concede a penalty just inside their 40m line, Ryan Trevaskis is again successful with the long kick 6-3, 26 min’s

Buzzard’s restart is taken and Dan Thorne puts a long kick back into Buzzards territory, they return the kick into touch on half way, Blues win their lineout and put up a high kick and a good chase means Blues are able to push Buzzards into touch 15 m in their own half, Blues win the lineout when Buzzards knock on, they play advantage but get held up so play is brought back. Buzzards forwards manage to disrupt Blues scrum giving them the put in, scrum won they force Blues defence to concede a penalty, Buzzards kick to touch.
Blues manage to get their hands to the ball at the lineout but knock on, Buzzards win their scrum and run the ball but don’t get far before they spill it in the tackle, Blues gather and run the ball before they chip and chase, Buzzards get their hands on the ball but the Blues are quickly there forcing Buzzards to concede the penalty, Ryan Trevaskis successful with another long penalty, 9-3, 36min’s

Buzzards restart is not 10 giving Blues a scrum on half way, Buzzards forwards make amends and win Blues scrum, they launch an attack but concede a penalty at the break down allowing Blues to kick to touch and the half time whistle

Blues kick off the second half and manage to get their hands on the ball, Blues attack but cough up possession allowing Buzzards to kick out of defence, Blues take but the returning kick is straight in touch. Buzzards win their lineout then a penalty, which is kicked to touch just outside Blues 22; they win the lineout but hand over possession Blues winning a penalty scrum. Blues win the scrum then a penalty, which is kicked to touch. Buzzards steal the lineout and win a scrum when Blues knock on both teams make mistakes, which ends with a Buzzards scrum just outside Blues 22.
Scrum has to be reset twice so ref has a chat with both front rows, Buzzards win their scrum and run the ball but don’t get far before they are ushered into touch, lineout won Blues kick to touch just in their own half. Buzzards win their lineout and run the ball making good progress before the Newbury defence infringes just outside their 22 in front of the posts, Buzzards kick brings the score to 9-6, 53 mins

Blues restart kick is chased well but Blues knock on, Buzzards win the scrum but they knock on giving Blues an attacking scrum, again Blues infringe giving Buzzards a penalty allowing them to kick out of defence, the kick doesn’t reach touch allowing Blues to run back at Buzzards, Blues make good ground through their backs before Buzzards manage to steal the ball and kick well into the Blues half, Tom Bass pulls up injured as he gets to the ball and a knock on gives Buzzards an attacking scrum.

Buzzards win their scrum then a penalty which is kicked into touch giving them a 5m lineout, from the lineout Buzzards win a penalty which just misses the posts, Buzzards have had the best of the play over the last few minutes and are keeping the pressure on the Blues defence.
Blues kick long from the 22 drop out and a good chase ends with a yellow for Blues with a marginal high tackle, Buzzards penalty again fails to reach touch allowing Blues to run the ball but a mistake halts their progress and gives Buzzards possession, they are then penalised at the break down, Dan Thorne takes a quick tap and breaks a tackle which forces the Buzzards defence to infringe again, this time Ryan Trevaskis steps up and kicks another long range penalty 12-6 62 min’s

The Buzzards restart is taken by Blues under pressure from the Buzzards chasers, Blues manage to recycle the ball and a great kick from Ryan Trevaskis rolls nicely into touch well in Buzzards half, Buzzards win the lineout but Blues are awarded a penalty which Ryan Trevaskis kicks from wide out on the right, 15-6 68 mins

From the Buzzards restart the Blues kick straight out giving Buzzards a lineout well in Blues half, Buzzards win their lineout and again run the ball putting the Blues defence under pressure, the ball is knocked on giving Blues a scrum and a chance to relieve the pressure.

Blues win their scrum but a knock on hands possession back to Buzzards, from their scrum they win a penalty which is kicked to touch, they win the lineout and run the ball again really testing the Blues defence which in the ends concedes a penalty, Buzzards slot the kick through the posts 15-9, 73 min’s

Buzzards return Blues restart kick, Jamie Futcher takes and chips the Buzzards defence, a great chase by him and Toby Thorne forces Buzzards into touch, Blues lose their lineout allowing Buzzards to kick clear, Dan Thorne takes and sets up an attack, Blues make great progress as the ball is swung across the pitch with the try line in sight Blues knock on and the best try scoring chance of the match has gone.
Blues forwards put real pressure on the Buzzards scrum and after two re-sets Buzzards manage to clear to touch just inside their 22, Buzzards manage to steal Blues lineout but knock on giving Blues a scrum, from the scrum Blues attack but lose the ball allowing Buzzards to again clear to touch, Blues win the lineout but another mistake gives Buzzards a scrum in their own half.
Buzzards win their scrum but this time they make the mistake losing the ball at the tackle, Blues attack getting into Buzzards 22 Josh Winfield making good ground before an alleged forward pass ends another great try scoring opportunity. Buzzards win their scrum a clearing kick takes play just short of half way, Blues gather and run the ball, Buzzards are quickly up in defence but give away a penalty, Blues kick to touch instead of the long penalty chance and the final whistle is blown

A really hard fought game played in very wet conditions, mistakes and great defence from both sides meaning neither side were able to make the break through and score a try
