Newbury Blues have to swap to top pitch as the main pitch is waterlogged and the early kick off suits them as they beat 2nd in the table Salisbury.

The swap to pitch 4 seems to suit the Blues as they give one of their best displays of the season to beat 2nd in the table Salisbury in a hard fought clash of two teams in the top four in the league, the game well controlled by referee Alan Green.

Salisbury kick the game off and get the advantage when Blues knock on, scrum won Salisbury probe the Blues defensive line but lose the ball allowing Blues to run, Blues are penalised at the tackle for holding on, Salisbury kicking to touch just in Blues 22, lineout won Salisbury’s forwards maul towards the line making slow progress but winning a penalty which they kick just wide of the posts.
Blues take the 22 drop out which is gathered by Salisbury and they launch another attack, Blues defence holds firm and they get a penalty at the tackle, Ryan Trevaskis kicks to touch well in Salisbury’s half, lineout won Blues run at Salisbury’s defence making good ground before Salisbury infringe giving Blues a kickable penalty, Ryan Trevaskis successfully kicks the penalty 3-0, 6 mins

Salisbury’s restart kick is safely gathered by Blues who keep it in the forwards and make ground before Salisbury manage to steal possession, they attack making good ground getting into Blues 22 before Blues defence halts their progress and wins a penalty which is kicked to touch in midfield. Blues knock on at the lineout giving Salisbury a scrum, Blues infringe at the scrum giving Salisbury a penalty, which they kick to touch, lineout won Salisbury again put pressure on Blues defence but a knock on hands the ball to Blues who play the advantage and run across the pitch and out of the danger zone, Blues knock on giving Salisbury the scrum. From the scrum Salisbury chip the ball over the Blues defence and chase, Blues gather and run out of defence getting up to half way and win a penalty, which is kicked to touch on Salisbury’s 22, Blues just win a scrappy lineout and are further rewarded when Salisbury infringe at the tackle giving Blues a penalty, Ryan Trevaskis steps up and slots the penalty through the posts making the score 6-0, 16 min’s

Salisbury’s restart is taken by Blues but a knock on gives Salisbury an attacking scrum, Salisbury’s forwards hold their scrum and after a couple of phases Salisbury kick to touch well in Blues half, lineout won Blues send a long kick back into Salisbury’s half, they gather and kick to touch still in their own half. Blues win their lineout but infringe giving Salisbury a penalty scrum, Salisbury win their scrum and run at the Blues defensive line winning a second scrum, Salisbury are penalised at the scrum giving Blues a penalty, Ryan Trevaskis has a long shot at the posts and is unlucky when it hits the posts and bounces back in play, Blues chasers are up quickly and keep Salisbury penned in their own 22, Salisbury under pressure concede a penalty which Ryan Trevaskis slots between the posts 9-0 25 min’s

Blues gather Salisbury’s restart kick and return the kick well into Salisbury’s half, they gather and run the ball getting up to half way before they knock on giving Blues the scrum, Blues hold their scrum but a loose pass puts them under pressure and they concede a penalty and earn a yellow card. Salisbury tap and go getting into Blues 22, Salisbury put the Blues defence under some serious pressure through a prolonged period but as they get to the try line they spill the ball allowing Blues to kick out of defence, Salisbury gather and run back at the Blues winning a penalty which they kick to touch, the kick drifts long and over the dead ball line giving Blues a 22 drop out.
Blues take the 22-drop out kicking long, Salisbury catch and launch another attack but don’t get far before a forward pass halts their progress. Salisbury’s forwards manage to turn Blues scrum 90 giving them the put in, scrum won they run at Blues getting into Blues half Blues defence keeps up the pressure and push Salisbury backwards and into touch just in their own half, Blues knock on at the lineout giving Salisbury a scrum

Blues kick off the second half and nearly re-gather the kick but knock on, Salisbury win their scrum and kick to touch in Blues half, Blues hold their lineout but soon cough up possession allowing Salisbury to run through some poor Blues tackles with some slick passing play to score 9-5 43 min’s

Blues juggle the backs to suit the injury and Dan Thorne takes the restart kick, Salisbury catch and put up a high kick back into Blues half their chase is good and they force Blues to concede a penalty then 10 yds for chat, Salisbury’s kicker is just wide with the long attempt.
Blues take the 22 drop out, Salisbury gather and attck the Blues, after a couple of phases they kick up field, Mike Walker takes and sets off on a good run getting into Salisbury’s half before he is halted, Blues recycle the ball at the tackle quickly and force Salisbury to concede the penalty, Dan Thorne just wide with the long attempt 46 mins

Blues win the lineout and try running the ball but are held up by the Salisbury defence so they change tact and a grubber kick is sent through, Salisbury gather and kick back into Blues half, Mike Walker takes and sets off on a weaving run, Blues keep the ball live and get up to Salisbury’s 22 before a knock on gives Salisbury a scrum. Salisbury win their scrum but good Blues pressure forces them to concede a penalty, Blues Dan Thorne just wide with the long attempt

Salisbury take the 22 drop out, Blues catch and run, Salisbury steal possession at the breakdown winning a scrum, from the scrum Salisbury run at the Blues defence which holds firm eventually pushing Salisbury backwards and Blues win a scrum close to Salisbury’s 22. Blues pack shoves the Salisbury pack backwards before they release the ball to the backs who get up to the line but are held up, Blues have an attacking 5m scrum, a great shove by the Blues pack puts real pressure on the Salisbury pack and they are pushed backwards allowing Matt Horne to pick up at the base and touch down for his second try Dan Thorne converting 23-12, 78 mins

Salisbury’s restart is taken by Blues but they don’t make much ground before Salisbury get a penalty scrum, Newbury put in a big shove and win their scrum and brings the final whistle and a Blues victory

A great result for the Blues in a game in which both sides give their all, a hard fought clean game of rugby well marshalled by the ref Alan Green who kept both teams under his control
