Newbury Blues travel to Bournemouth and kick off the league season in style

Newbury Blues fly into Bournemouth and upset the odds when they produce a great performance to win their opening league match in South West Premier and jet off with the points.

Blues kick off the new league season and manage to pressure Bournemouth who have to kick clear from their own 22, Blues win the lineout and run at the Bournemouth defence, the ball is spun wide reaching Toby Thorne who passes out to Toby Pearce he draws the defender and slips a pass back inside to Toby Thorne who is over to score a great early team try, Richard West slots the long conversion 0-7 2 mins

Bournemouth restart, Blues take and return the kick deep into Bournemouth’s half, Bournemouth gather and run the ball making good ground before the Blues defence hold them up and win the scrum. Blues get a penalty at the scrum which is slotted into touch, lineout won Blues attack and a good run from Rhys Davies takes play back deep into Bournemouth’s half, Blues keep the ball live and their forwards take over, sadly a Bournemouth player suffers a serious leg injury in the tackle on 8 mins and play is held up for 15 mins
Play restarts with a Blues scrum on Bournemouth’s 22, scrum wide Blues attack the left hand side through several phase’s before the ball is spread back right through several hands to winger Toby Pearce who rounds the defender to score a great try Richard West converts 0-14 11 mins

Kyle Doel takes Bournemouth’s restart kick and the ball is recycled, Blues kick is straight into touch so back for a Bournemouth lineout, from the lineout Bournemouth’s forwards maul but are held so they spread the ball out through the backs winning a penalty in-front of the posts which their 15 Grant Hancox kicks 3-14 14 mins

Blues take the restart kick, which is gathered by Bournemouth who run back at Blues before a deft chip kick is sent over the Blues defence, a good bounce nearly works but a knock on gives Blues a scrum and a chance to get out of their half. Bournemouth pinch the scrum and again attack the Blues defence winning a penalty in Blues 22, they kick the penalty into touch and have a 5m lineout, lineout won Bournemouth split the Blues defence to score their first try, Adam Davies, Grant Hancox slots the conversion 10-14 19 mins

Blues restart kick is knocked on by Bournemouth giving Blues a scrum just outside Bournemouth’s 22, Blues again run the ball from their scrum getting into Bournemouth’s 22 before they are tackled into touch, Bournemouth win their lineout and kick clear, Toby Pearce takes and Blues are off running again, making good ground getting back into Bournemouth’s 22 before a knock on halts their progress. Bournemouth win their scrum going backwards and kick clear, Blues win the lineout and again run at Bournemouth before sending a chip kick over their defence, Bournemouth gather and run at Blues before sending a long kick into Blues try area Blues touch down. Blues take the 22-drop out and manage to re-gather the ball their forwards getting up to half way before Bournemouth knock on in the tackle. Scrum won Blues spread the ball wide, Toby Thorne, Jamie Futcher both making ground Rhys Davies then Finn Walsh keeping the move going getting up to the 5m line, Bournemouth infringe giving Blues a long penalty which just slides past the posts 30 mins.

Bournemouth take the 22 drop out, Blues gather and are soon back into Bournemouth’s 22 with a Joe Pigott run, Blues keep up the pressure Toby Thorne getting up to the try line and over, in the melee the ref rules held up which seems the less likely outcome, Blues have a 5 m scrum which they win and run at Bournemouth’s defence which holds firm and wins a penalty. Bournemouth kick to touch, lineout won Bournemouth run at Blues getting into Blues half but knock on, scrum won Blues attack and are rewarded with a penalty the long shot is just wide of the posts on 37 mins.

Bournemouth take the 22 drop out Blues gather and run but are penalised in the tackle, Bournemouth kick to touch, lineout won Bournemouth attack and manage to break several Blues tackles for Adam Davies to score his second try wide out on the right the long conversion is just wide, 15-14 39 mins

Blues restart is gathered by Bournemouth who set off on another attack , Bournemouth attempt a drop goal which is wide and the half time whistle is blown. Time for the coaches to do their work

Bournemouth kick off the second half and manage to snaffle possession allowing them to put the Blues defence under pressure through several phases and win a penalty which is slotted over by Grant Hancox 18-14 42 mins

Blues take the restart kick and good pressure forces Bournemouth backwards and wins them a penalty at the breakdown Richard West slots between the posts 18-17 45 mins

Bournemouth do the same and re-gather their restart kick and win a penalty which is successfully kicked by Grant Hancox 21-17 47mins

Bournemouth attack from Blues restart and manage to get into Blues 22 before a knock on gives Blues a defensive scrum, Blues are having the better of the scrums and Bournemouth going backwards concede a penalty which is kicked to touch. Lineout won, Blues put Bournemouth under pressure through several phases but cough up possession at the tackle allowing Bournemouth to run out of defence, Blues manage to get the ball back when Bournemouth make a mistake Blues kick deep into Bournemouth’s half. Bournemouth gather and clear to touch, Blues lose their lineout allowing Bournemouth to mount another running attack but again they lose the ball in the tackle letting Blues hack the ball up field, Richard West is first there he gathers and pops the ball up to Ollie Spanswick who is round the defender to make the remaining 20 m to score close to the posts Richard West converts, 21-24 55 mins

Bournemouth’s restart kick is taken by Blues who kick deep, Bournemouth return the kick, Blues gather and run the ball a great Ollie Spanswick run takes play well into Bournemouth’s half where Blues are awarded a penalty at the break down which Richard West kicks 21-27 59 mins

Bournemouth’s restart kick is gathered by Josh Winfield, the ball is recycled allowing the clearing kick, Bournemouth gather and some good running rugby takes them up to the Blues 22 but good defence forces the mistake and a knock on gives Blues a defensive scrum, Blues hold their scrum and kick clear to touch. Bournemouth win the lineout just in Blues half and run at Blues forcing the penalty and a yellow card for Blues, the penalty is just wide on 63 mins
Blues take the 22 drop out and now have to defend a Bournemouth side who have a man advantage, Bournemouth run the ball before a cross field kick is well chased and they manage to disrupt and regain the ball, again they run at Blues getting up to the 22 but a wild pass sails into touch.

Blues win the lineout and Richard West relives the pressure with a good clearing kick into Bournemouth’s half, they gather and again good pressure takes up field and they kick into Blues 22, Blues manage to gather and a good kick from Toby Thorne rolls into touch taking play back into Bournemouth’s half.
Blues manage to steal the lineout and after a couple of phases Blues win a penalty, which just slides past the posts 70 mins

Bournemouth’s 22 restart kick is hit straight to a Blues player who attack making good ground before they are held up in the tackle giving Bournemouth a scrum just outside their 22, Bournemouth just manage to win their scrum going backwards and kick clear. Blues take and a good Toby Thorne run then chip kick and a great re-gather takes play up to the try line before he is tackled into touch 1 m short, Bournemouth win the lineout and manage to run the ball out of their own half before they lose the ball, Blues don’t get far before a knock on gives Bournemouth a scrum.
Bournemouth win a free kick at the scrum and a good attack takes play up to Blues 22 before a knock on gives Blues a chance to clear. Blues win the scrum and after a couple of runs kick deep into Bournemouth’s half, a good chase results in Bournemouth knocking on under pressure from the Blues chasers, Blues are dominant at the scrum and win a penalty, the long attempt is just wide leaving the game still in the balance with a minute to go
Bournemouth take the 22 drop out, Blues are lucky to gather a bouncing ball that has re bounding off the catchers body, Blues attack Bournemouth getting up to their 22 before the kick into touch brings the full time whistle and a great win for Blues

This was a highly competitive fair game and probably one of Blues best games for a long time, a superb start to the new season in South West Premier, credit goes to the whole squad as nobody had an off game and the interchanges worked well.
