Newbury Blues produce a better second half performance to take the win and a try bonus point against bottom club Hornets

Newbury RFC U6’s lead the Blues out onto the pitch for this league game

Hornets kick the game off and win a lineout, from the lineout Hornets attack getting well into Blues 22 before conceding a penalty, Blues kick to touch win the lineout and run the ball, Blues lose the ball allowing Hornets to counter attack, but they are tackled into touch.
Blues win the lineout and again put pressure on Hornets defence, another mistake gives possession to Hornets, after several mistakes by both sides Hornets elect to kick to touch, Blues win their lineout and set off on a running attack before putting up a high kick deep in Hornets territory.
Hornets gather and after a couple of phases kick, the kick is to deep so back for a Blues scrum just in their own half, Blues win their scrum and try running the ball before a good kick rolls into touch, Blues win a scrum at Hornets lineout and run the ball but run out of space and are tackled into touch.
Blues steal the lineout and run across the pitch getting into Hornets 22 before they are held up giving Hornets the scrum, Blues manage to steal the scrum and their forwards pick and drive up to the line before Josh Winfield breaks through the Hornets defence to score Richard West adds the conversion to make the score 7-0 on 15 mins

Hornets take the restart kick, Blues return the kick, Hornets gather and run the ball before they put up a high kick, Blues gather and run but final pass is not forthcoming, and the ball is spilt in the tackle, Hornets kick to touch, Blues win the lineout and kick to touch in Hornets half.
Hornets win their lineout and run at the Blues defence but don’t get far before a mistake hands the ball to Blues and another high kick is put up, Hornets knock on giving Blues a scrum, from the scrum Blues kick to touch well in Hornets half. Blues win the lineout and attack the Hornets defence but lose the ball, they manage to regather quickly and set off on another attack, Hornets defence holds out and they win a penalty which they kick to touch.
Lineout won Hornets again put pressure on the Blues defence but cannot make much ground, so they kick and chase, Blues gather and run the ball back into Hornets half, they keep up the pressure and win a long penalty which is just wide on 27 mins

Hornets take the 22 drop out kick and manage to get their hands on the ball but soon concede a penalty scrum, Blues win their scrum and run at Hornets, Rory Jones makes good ground but is injured in the tackle and play is held up for several minutes.

Blues win their restart scrum but lose the ball, Hornets set off on another attack and win a scrum which they win and run the ball before a good kick rolls into touch, Blues win their lineout and run but don’t get far before they are ushered into touch, Blues get a scrum at the lineout when Hornets through is not straight, Blues then get a penalty at the lineout which is kicked to touch, Hornets disrupt Blues lineout and steal the ball, they again run at Blues before they put up another high kick, Blues gather and some good running rugby means they have Hornets on the back foot, Blues get a penalty scrum which they win and scrum half Joe Pigott makes a run before putting in a grubber kick which runs nicely into touch
Hornets manage to get there first and get their hands on the ball and clear to touch bringing the half time whistle

Blues kick off the second half which Hornets knock on, Blues win the scrum and run the ball getting deep into Hornets half and win a penalty, which Richard West kicks 10-0 42 mins, Blues have started the second half far more positive than they had played throughout the first half.

Hornets take the restart kick which Blues catch and run getting back into Hornets half before they cough up possession in the tackle, Hornets attack and win a penalty which they kick to touch, Hornets win their lineout and again attack but this time thy cough up possession when they knock on. Blues win the scrum and kick clear up the pitch, Hornets gather and again attack the Blues defence playing across the pitch, Hornets win a penalty scrum and keep up the pressure but a foot in touch halts their progress.
Blues win the lineout and kick clear Hornets knock on giving Blues a scrum just in their own half, Blues attack down the LHS from the scrum Jamie Futcher making ground before a pop pass release’s Josh Love who splits the defence to score wide out on the left Richard West kicks the long conversion 17-0 55 mins

Hornets take the restart kick Blues gather and run the ball but a knock on halts their progress and Hornets have a scrum, Hornets attack from the scrum and this time they put sustained pressure on the Blues defence which gets them up to the try line, but they are held, the scrum is reset and they win the ball and have soon broken through the Blues defence to score wide out on their left, the long conversion is short 17-5 58 mins

Blues restart and a good chase results in a scrum for Blues which they win and run at Hornets getting well into Hornets 22, several phases of play spent in Hornets 22 results in Blues spreading the ball through hands again the final pass doesn’t come with the try line beckoning, Blues manage to keep possession though and after a couple of drives Josh Winfield crashes through to score his second try close to the posts Richard West converts 24-5 66 mins

Hornets take the restart kick, Blues gather and Ollie Spanswick breaks through the Hornets defence to make good yards and take play nearly up to Hornets 22, he draws the last defender and passes to Rob Drysdale who scampers the final 25 yards to score the bonus point try beside the posts Richard West converts making the score 31-5 67 mins

Hornets restart Blues take and return the kick, Hornets run and make good ground, two Blues players clash heads in the tackle and play is held up after Hornets had got to Blues 22.

Hornets win the restart scrum and set off attacking the Blues defence but spill the ball, Blues try running the ball before clearing to touch, Blues steal the lineout and get up to halfway but a knock on halts their progress, Hornets win the scrum and run through some poor Blues tackles getting up to Blues 22 before they lose the ball. Blues run the ball before they try the kick which hits a Hornets player and goes into touch, Blues win the lineout and run back at Hornets who manage to steal the ball at the tackle but give away a penalty. Blues tap and go quickly Toby Thorne onto Dan Thorne and Blues are in Hornets 22, Blues knock on in the tackle giving Hornets a chance to relieve the pressure, scrum won Hornets then win a penalty which they kick to touch, from the lineout Hornets attack getting up to the try line but cannot score, Blues defence holds out and wins a penalty which brings the full-time whistle

Blues deserve the try bonus point victory with a 3 try second half performance which was back to how we know this squad can play
