Newbury Blues win the first half 31-0 with a dominant display, then misfire in the second half and the rain taking it 12-5

Blues are forced into a late Friday night change Max Hayman suffering from a knee infection, Rob Drysdale coming in, Toby Thorne on the bench after his long injury time out.

Wimborne kick off on a wet and windy afternoon, Blues gather and run the ball winning a penalty which is kicked to touch, lineout won Blues cough up possession allowing Wimborne to kick to touch in Blues half, Wimborne steal the lineout and attack but lose the ball forwards, Blues play the advantage and put up a high kick. A good chase by Tom Hunt is rewarded with a Blues penalty which is kicked to touch in Wimborne’s 22, Blues lineout is not straight giving Wimborne a defensive scrum. Blues pack make amends and a huge shove pushes Wimborne 20m back to their try line, they in desperation infringe to stop the Blues pack which results in a penalty try 7-0 6 mins

Wimborne’s restart kick is not 10m so back for a Blues scrum on half way, from the scrum Blues are straight on the attack making good ground before putting in a neat grubber kick which is carried into touch by Wimborne, lineout won Blues attack taking play across the pitch then back, Wimborne intercept and after a couple of phases kick, Blues run back at Wimborne put spill the ball allowing Wimborne to kick clear upfield.
Blues gather and again attack getting into Wimborne’s 22 before conceding a penalty at the tackle, Wimborne’s kick finds touch still in their own half, Blues steal the lineout and a good run from Alex Millar releases Jamie McIntyre who gets over the line but is held up by a great Wimborne tackle, Blues win the scrum allowing Alex Millar to pick up the ball and break through three tackles to score close to the posts, Rory Jones adds the conversion 14-0 13 mins

Blues gather Wimborne’s restart kick and run straight back into Wimborne’s half winning a penalty which is kicked to touch, a scrappy line out results in a Blues scrum when Wimborne knock on, from the scrum Blues run the ball but a knock on gives Wimborne a scrum and a chance to clear, scrum won Wimborne run the ball and get a penalty at the tackle and Blues a yellow card, Wimborne’s penalty kick doesn’t find touch allowing Blues to run the ball back into Wimborne’s half and win a penalty at the tackle. Blues kick to touch hold their lineout and the forwards maul up to the try line Ben Hicks eventually pushing through to score a well worked try, the conversion is just wide, 19-0 20 mins

Wimborne kick off Blues gather and Alex Millar makes a good run, Blues keep the ball live Kyle Doel and Rory Jones making good runs, Blues put up a high kick which Wimborne just get hold of in front of the chasing Harvey North, Wimborne run the ball but concede a penalty at the tackle Blues kick to touch win the lineout and after several pick and drives from Dylan Stewart, Rob Drysdale and Kyle Doel the ball reaches Alex Bancroft who jinks through the tackles before a neat inside pass releases Jamie McIntyre to break through and score the bonus point try, the conversion is just wide, 24-0 23mins

Wimborne restart, Blues lose the ball allowing Wimborne to attack across the pitch and get a penalty at the tackle, they kick to touch in Blues 22 win the lineout but knock on in the maul, Blues win the scrum and after a couple of runs clear to touch, lineout won Wimborne’s forwards maul but again they lose the ball forwards, scrum won Blues quickly spread the ball wide taking play into Wimborne’s half and up to Wimborne’s 22, Wimborne’s defence holds firm and Blues are pushed back and held giving Wimborne a scrum, under pressure from the Blues pack they knock on giving Blues an attacking scrum.
Blues win the scrum and take play up to the try line but cannot make it over instead Wimborne’s defence get their hands on the ball and clear to touch, Blues win a penalty at the lineout but play the advantage taking play across the pitch, the ref brings play back for the penalty which is kicked to touch well in Wimborne’s 22, lineout won Blues mount another attack through several phase’s before Kyle Doel breaks through several phases to score Rory Jones converts 31-0 38 mins

Play restarts but after a couple of phases Wimborne get their hands on the ball winning a penalty which they kick to touch in Blues 22, Blues steal the lineout and clear to touch bringing half time

Blues kick off the second half with the rain now quite heavy, Wimborne gather but get the lineout when Blues knock the ball into touch, lineout won they clear the ball upfield, Blues gather and run back at Wimborne getting into Wimborne’s half before they concede a penalty scrum, Blues attack from the scrum and after several phase’s Kyle DoeL makes a charging run taking play into Wimborne’s 22 and Blues get a penalty scrum, Blues get another penalty scrum, this time Blues get the ball out and pass it wide quickly for Josh Winfield to break through and score, the conversion is wide 36-0 48 mins

Blues gather the restart kick and a good run from Josh Winfield then kick bounces off a Wimborne player into touch, lineout won Blues attack and a good Dylan Stewart run takes play into Wimborne’s half Blues make the mistake and a knock on gives Wimborne the ball they play the advantage and then after a couple of runs put up a high kick, Blues gather and return the kick, Wimborne do the same. Blues gather and some good running play takes them back into Wimborne’s half before a good crossfield kick is gathered by Wimborne but they knock on giving Blues an attacking scrum. Blues pack shove Wimborne backwards and the gap is created allowing Alex Millar to pick up and stroll through the defence to score close to the posts, 43-0 52 mins

Wimborne restart, Blues just manage to get hold of the ball and after a couple of phases put up a high kick, Wimborne gather and their winger dodges through the Newbury tacklers to make the 40m to score just before he is tackled into touch wide out on their right, the conversion is wide 43-5 54 mins

Blues restart and the next 10 mins is spent in midfield with both teams kicking possession away and making mistakes

Tom Hunt on Alex Sparkes off 64 mins

Blues are first to look like adding to their score but after a couple of scrums in Wimborne’s 22 concede a penalty allowing Wimborne to clear, Blues win the lineout but it is not long before they lose the ball, Wimborne are now back in the game and forcing Blues to make mistakes, the rain is taking its toll and play is stop start due to the amount of mistakes

Both teams get chances to score in the final minutes but mistakes in the oppositions 22 means no more points are scored, the final whistle is blown when Wimborne knock on in Blues 22

The Blues squad have won again but are disappointed with their second half performance, credit to Wimborne who kept fighting to the final whistle, good luck for the rest of the season
