Newbury welcolmed Trowbridge to Monks Lane for the first time and kept up their 100% home win success

Newbury also welcolmed back several of the regular forwards who were injured or unavailable last week

Trowbridge kick off Newbury take and the forwards pick and drive before the ball is kicked upfield and into touch. Trowbridge win their lineout and keep it in the forwards mauling well into Newbury’s 22 where they are awarded a scrum, from the scrum Trowbridge win a penalty which is kicked to touch, lineout won Trowbridge put the Newbury defence under pressure, eventually Newbury are able to kick to safety through Richard West when they are awarded a penalty. Newbury win their lineout and the forwards Ben Hicks, Chris Rowland, Nathan Thomas, Henry (Maka) Veikune, Finn Walsh maul forwards before Josh Love breaks and makes good ground before he is shoved into touch just in Trowbridge’s half. Newbury win a scrum when Trowbridge’s lineout is not straight but immediately give away a penalty for crossing, Trowbridge kick to touch and win their lineout then put up the high kick which is taken by Tom Martin who weaves his way upfield, Finn Walsh takes over before releasing Paul Hackett who makes more ground before he is tackled, Newbury keep the ball but a loose pass is intercepted allowing Trowbridges winger Ashley Chalk to run from inside his own half to score, Lloyd Davis converting 0-7, 10 min’s
Newbury restart and manage to keep hold of the ball, this possession is quickly rewarded with a penalty, Richard West slots it through the posts from approx 40 m out, 3-7, 12 min’s
Trowbridge kick off and reclaim the ball, the ball is fed back and kicked to touch just inside Newbury’s 22. Blues relieve the pressure when the lineout is won and the ball cleared to touch, Trowbridge again put the Blues defence under pressure when from the lineout a chip forward into Newburys try area is just hacked into touch before Trowbridge get there, Trowbridge win the 5m scrum but lose the ball allowing Newbury to hack it forward, Newbury are quickly up but give away a penalty allowing Trowbridge to kick to touch and keep up the pressure on the Newbury defence.
Trowbridge win the lineout and maul forward causing the Newbury defence to mount a prolonged rear guard action trying to keep them out, Newbury manage to halt their progress and hold them up giving them the scrum. The Blues forwards keep the scrum and the ball is fed back toe Richard West to kick to touch just in the Trowbridge half. Sadley this kick is the last for Richard West who has to come off with a groin injury, Will Clarke comes on 22 min’s.
Trowbridge win the lineout and put up a high kick which is taken by Jamie Futcher who kicks forward, Trowbridge take but Tom Martin and Jamie Futcher are quickly up and Trowbridge knock on.
Newbury win the scrum but spoil the packs good work when they give away a penalty allowing Trowbridge to kick to touch and set up an attacking lineout. Luckily for Newbury the lineout is not straight giving the Blues a scrum, from the scrum Will Clarke is able to kick to touch and relieve the pressure.
Trowbridge send up the high kick from the lineout which is taken by Blues and Trowbridge are penalised allowing Blues to take a long kick for the posts which is just short, Newbury are quickly up and a hurried clearing kick dosent make touch allowing Newbury to mount another attack but a knock on stops their progress. Trowbridge win their scrum and kick up field, Josh Bartlett takes the ball and runs back at Trowbridge who give away a penalty, Will Clarke slots it into touch.
Newbury win the lineout and the forwards march forwards through Ben Hicks, Finn Walsh, Henry (maka) Veikune, and Nathan Thomas before Eddie Farebrother crashes through the Trowbridge defence to score wide out on the left, Will Clarke slots over the long conversion 10-7, 28 min’s
Trowbridge restart and manage to reclaim the ball but lose possession when Newbury steal the ball in the ruck, they soon have the ball back when the Blues knock on, Newbury soon have it back when from their scrum Trowbridge knock on. Newbury win the scrum and kick upfield, Trowbridge take and after a couple of phases put up a high kick which is taken by Tom Martin who sets off on one of his trademark runs weaving through the defence before releasing Eddie Farebrother who makes good ground passing to Josh Bartlett who is stopped just short of the try line, Newburys forwards are there quickly and the ball is recycled allowing Chris Rowland to crash through the Trowbridge defence to score, will Clarke converting, 17-7, 35 min’s
Trowbridge again manage to get the ball from their restart but a huge tackle from Chris Rowland forces a knock on giving the Blues a scrum, Joe Binfield takes the ball from the back of the scrum and feeds Will Clarke who then feeds Dan Thorne who gets through one tackle before Iain Herriot makes more ground before he is tackled, Newbury keep possession and Dan Thorne breaks one tackle before passing to Josh Love who juggles the ball but keeps hold of it to score close to the posts, Will Clarke adds the conversion, 24-7, 37 mins
From the restart Newbury kick to touch, Trowbridge win the lineout and maul well into Newbury’s half, winning a penalty they tap and go and win the second Newbury not 10, the penalty is kicked and just misses the posts bringing the half time whistle.

Newbury kick off the second half Trowbridge take and maul forwards winning the penalty which is kicked into touch, Newbury steal the lineout but hand possession back when they knock on just in their own half, Trowbridge attack the Blues defence from the scrum but again a mistake halts play when they knock on.
Newbury win the scrum, Joe Binfield passes back to Will Clarke who kicks upfield, Trowbridge take and attack again, their chip through bounces kindly for the Blues, Josh Bartlett winning the race to touch down, play comes back for a Trowbridge 5 scrum which they win but then lose the ball, Newbury try to run out of defence but knock on giving Trowbridge an atttacking scrum.
Trowbridge win the scrum then force the Newbury defence to concede a penalty, which they take quickly and break through to score close to the posts, 24-14, 49 min’s

The Newbury restart is taken by Trowbridge and kicked into touch, Newbury win the lineout but in trying to run the ball are held up so try a kick upfield but are penalised for offside. Trowbidge kick to touch win the lineout and run at the Newbury defence, Newbury manage to steal the ball and feed the ball quickly through the backs allowing Iain Herriot to make a great run drawing the defender before passing to Jamie Futcher who hands off the last defender and makes the final yards to cross the line and make it round under the posts to score the bonus point try, Will Clarke converting from infront of the posts, 31-14, 56 min’s
Trowbridge kick off and manage to reclaim the ball, after several phases of play spent in the midfield area Newbury manage to steal the ball then win a penalty which Will Clarke kicks to touch, Newbury win the lineout but the Trowbridge defence holds them up in the tackle giving the scrum to Trowbridge. Scrum won Trowbridge attack, their winger runs then grubber kicks but his progress is stopped by Jamie Futcher who gives away a penalty and gets a lecture from the ref. Trowbridge kick to touch well in Newburys half, lineout won the forwards maul forward and get into Newburys 22, the defence holds out and Trowbridge knock on.
Newbury win the scrum and again Joe Binfield gets the ball back to Will Clarke who relieves the pressure kicking safely to touch. Newbury win a scrum from Trowbridges not straight lineout but Newbury cough up possession allowing Trowbridge to run the ball back into Newbury’s half before their progress is halted when they knock on. Newbury win the scrum and kick upfield Trowbridge take and kick back upfield and into touch. Newbury win the lineout and the ball is fed from Joe Binfield through the backs allowing Josh Bartlett and Tom Martin to make good ground before the mistake comes with a knock on.
Play for the next few minutes is untidy by both sides with mistakes coming at regular intervals halting any attacking play and handing over possession. Chris Rowlands coming off on 60 min’s Nathan Thomas coming back on.
Newbury have a period of attacking play testing the Trowbridge defence who manage to hold out, Newbury try a chip through but Trowbridge win the race touching down in their try area. From their 22 drop out Tom Martin runs at the defence which again holds firm and eventually forces the mistake from the Blues and win a penalty scrum. Joe Binfield comes off, Alex Price-Richards comes on for the last 12 mins.
Trowbridge win their scrum and mount a concerted attack getting into Newburys half then into the 22, the Newbury defence holds them out through several phases of play but cannot get hold of the ball. Chris Rowland on for Paul Hackett shoulder injury
Trowbridge win a scrum and get the ball quickly through the backs to score wide out on 39 min’s making the score 31-19
Newbury restart and are penalised straight away giving Trowbridge the chance to keep up the pressure on the Blues defence for the last few minutes of injury time. Trowbridge kick to touch win the lineout and then win another penalty, a score now would give them a losing bonus point. The last minutes are spent with Newbury defending their try line before the mistake comes and Newbury kick the ball to touch bringing the final whistle.

Newbury back to winning ways, maximum points from a bit of a scrappy stop start game, well contested by both sides. The Blues were disappointed with their 2nd half performance and will have to improve this as on Saturday 18th Oct the Blues travel to Windsor who sit one place above us 3rd in the league for another Berkshire derby game and indeed another stern away fixture.
