Newbury Blues travelled to Windsor for this Berks derby and were unlucky not to return home with a victory and 4 points.

Newbury kick off on a cloudy windy day, and after a good chase infringe at the breakdown giving Windsor a penalty which they kick up-field and into touch, lineout won the Windsor forwards maul forwards making good ground before a knock on stops their progress. Newbury hold onto their scrum and Joe Binfield snaps the ball back to Will Clarke who kicks safely to touch, Newbury manage to win the lineout but concede a penalty allowing Windsor to kick into touch. This time their forwards win the lineout and maul forwards forcing the Newbury defence to give away a penalty which is kicked through the posts by Windsor 15 Chris Laidler, 3-0, 5 min’s
Newbury restart and after a great tackle from Tom Martin force’s the mistake and reclaim possession, but the kick to touch is straight out giving Windsor a lineout back up field, Windsor win their lineout and after a couple of phases a big kick is put up and back into Newbury’s half, Newbury return back to half way but knock on, Newbury’s pack manage to shove Windsor back and win the ball but trying to run down the blindside are shoved into touch. Newbury put pressure on the Windsor lineout and win a penalty, which is kicked safely to touch. Lineout won the Newbury forwards attack the Windsor defence but progress is held up illegally giving Newbury a penalty, which is just blown the wrong side of the posts.
Windsor restart and manage to regain possession but knock on giving Newbury the scrum, the forwards hold firm at the scrum but Newbury lose the ball allowing Windsor to chip over Newbury’s defence the ball rolling into touch. Newbury win their lineout and after a couple of phases Dan Thorne kicks into touch in Windsor territory, Newbury win a scrum from the lineout but infringe at the scrum giving Windsor a free kick.
Windsor take quickly and run the ball first before putting up a high kick back into Newbury’s half, Newbury return the kick but the wind wins taking the ball straight into touch. Newbury manage to steal the ball at the lineout and get the ball through the backs to Dan Thorne who kicks long, Windsor return the kick which is taken by Tom Martin in Newbury’s 22 and kicked up field into touch.
Windsor win the lineout and again their forwards keep it tight and maul up field winning a penalty, the wind holds up their penalty kick which fails to make touch allowing Newbury to kick long up field, Windsor return the kick back into Blues half, Newbury kick up field and into touch.
Newbury win a penalty at the lineout which is kicked into touch, lineout won Newbury hand possession back when the kick is straight into touch, Windsor win the lineout but concede a penalty, Newbury kick into touch.
Lineout won Newbury attack the Windsor defence, which holds firm and forces the mistake as Newbury knock on just outside Windsor’s 22, Windsor win the scrum and put up a high kick which they chase and reclaim but again a mistake halts their progress when they knock on in Newbury’s half. Windsor’s pack force Newbury back at the scrum and win a penalty which is slotted between the posts by Chris Laidler 6-0, 34 min’s

Newbury restart and chase but Windsor take and run back at Newbury winning a penalty when the Newbury defence infringes at the breakdown, Windsor kick to touch and win the lineout but this time they infringe giving Newbury the penalty, Will Clarke kicking to touch. Lineout won Newbury run at Windsor the ball reaches Tom Martin who chips the defender the ball bounces kindly allowing Will Clarke to catch and get over the line but two Windsor defenders manage to hold up the ball, Newbury have a 5 m scrum, from the scrum the Newbury forwards pick and drive through several phase but are unable to get over and ground the ball, eventually the ball is given to Chris Rowland who breaks through the Windsor defence to score, Will Clarke converting, 6-7, 39 min’s
Windsor restart, Newbury take and run cross field but cough up the ball allowing Windsor to attack and get into Newbury’s 22, after a couple of phases Newbury’s defence holds firm and wins a penalty which is kicked to touch bringing the half time whistle.

Windsor kick off the second half, Newbury take good run by Paul Hackett before the ball is recycled to Richard West who kicks forwards the ball rolling into touch, Windsor knock on at the lineout giving Newbury the scrum, the Newbury pack win the scrum allowing Paul Hackett to pick up at the base and set off up field passing to Josh Love who makes more ground before Joe Binfield gets the ball at the ruck and chips over the Windsor defence and into touch. Newbury steal the lineout but knock on giving Windsor a scrum, Windsor win a penalty at the scrum but the kick doesn’t make touch allowing Tom Martin to take and run back, the Windsor defence holds firm and win a penalty scrum.
From the scrum their scrum half chips the ball forward and into touch, the Windsor forwards knock on at the lineout giving the Blues a defensive scrum, Newbury run the ball from the scrum but don’t get far before the mistake comes and Windsor get a penalty. The lineout safely won they spread the ball wide through their backs giving their winger enough room toe run around the Newbury defence to score wide out on the left the conversion hitting the post,

Newbury restart and a great chase is rewarded with a penalty which Will Clarke slots between the posts 11-10, 47 min’s

The Windsor restart is taken by Josh Winfield who breaks a couple of tackles before releasing the ball to Tom Martin who chips the defender and chases, the support is soon their and win a penalty which is kicked to touch giving the Blues an attacking 5m lineout.
Lineout won the forwards pick and drive up to the try line but just cannot get over until after several phases the ball is picked up by Josh Winfield to crash over but the ref is on the other side of the ruck and unsighted so gives held up. Windsor win the scrum and kick to touch relieving the pressure, Newbury regroup and win the lineout and the ball is passed out to Aaron McDowell who runs a good line and breaks through forcing Windsor to concede a penalty which Will Clarke kicks 11-13 53 min’s

Windsor kick off, Newbury take and run the ball back into Windsor’s half before they concede a penalty allowing Windsor to kick to touch and relieve the pressure, Newbury regain possession when Windsor knock on at the lineout giving Newbury a scrum. Newbury win the scrum and kick into Windsor’s half, Windsor return the kick, Newbury take and again kick high and long, this time Windsor run the ball back and get into Newbury’s half before they chip the ball over the Newbury defence, Newbury gather and run the ball back into Windsor’s half before they are penalised giving Windsor a penalty scrum.

Windsor win a free kick at the scrum which is taken quickly by their 9 who gets through several Newbury’s tackles before he is stopped, the ball is kept live and fed through their backs across the field allowing their winger to beat the last tackle to score wide out on the left the conversion hits the post 18-13, 65 min’s

Windsor are quickly further in front when straight from the kick off they win a penalty which Chris Laidler kicks, 21-13, 66 min’s

Newbury restart and a good chase is spoilt when they give away a penalty scrum, Windsor win and kick, Newbury take and run back at Windsor but again are penalised allowing Windsor to kick to touch. Windsor knock on at the lineout giving Newbury a scrum in their own half, the forwards hold firm and get the ball out but the Blues are stopped when they are forced into touch.
Windsor under pressure at the lineout concede a penalty which Richard West slots into touch, lineout won the Blues again try to run cross field to make progress but knock on, Windsor have a scrum just inside their half, Newbury manage to win a penalty at the scrum and kick to touch giving them a 5m attacking lineout, the lineout is won and after several phases of forwards picking and driving the ball is popped out for the fast approaching Tom Martin to crash through the tackle to score, the conversion just wide, 21-18, 39 min’s

Windsor restart and the kick is taken by Paul Hackett who breaks the tackles to make good ground before releasing Rob Drysdale who makes more ground before passing the ball out to the backs but the knock on stops progress and gives Windsor a scrum just outside their 22, Windsor win a penalty at the scrum and kick to touch, a couple more phases of midfield play brings the final whistle.

Windsor were happy to take the win and 4 points from this hard fought scrappy derby game, Newbury earn a losing bonus point but could have gone home with a win if luck had been kinder to them, lets hope in the return home match the day is Newbury’s

Next Saturday 25th Oct Newbury are home to Bletchley, the Blues need to be ready for this game which has the potential to be a classic banana skin game as Bletchley are bottom of the league and still looking for their first win.
