Newbury travelled to Bletchley with a much changed side and fall to a resurgent Bletchley squad whose performance be-lie’s their league position

Newbury welcome two new players making their debut’s Joe Pigott and Ryan Davis, also a debut for Ed Clark who has been performing consistently for the stags, Steve Denner making his first start, Tom Sanders and Jack Steffen making their second starts of the season.

Newbury kick off and a good chase is spoilt when Newbury knock on, Bletchley win their scrum and make good ground getting up to half way before a loose pass rolls into touch. Blues win the lineout but a mistake hands possession back to Bletchley, this is the story of the next few minutes with Newbury making mistake after mistake, a good run by Iain Herriott linking with Jamie Futcher back to Iain Herriott gets Newbury nearly up to the try line but they are unable to make the final yards and ground the ball. Newbury get the penalty and kick to touch but after winning the lineout are penalised for crossing, Bletchley take the penalty and get out of defence and into Blues half, Newbury’s clearing kick is run back by the Bletchley forwards who get into Blues half and win a penalty which they kick through the posts 3-0, 7 mins

Again a great Newbury chase from their kick off ends with a knock on, Bletchley lose the scrum allowing Newbury to attack but again a mistake gives Bletchley another scrum and a chance to clear their lines, the clearing kick from the scrum is straight out giving the Blues a scrum. Newbury knock on so again Bletchley are able to get out of their half with a kick into touch, Newbury take quickly and get up to the Bletchley line but cannot ground the ball and in their hast to score lose the ball allowing Bletchley to clear the danger. Newbury win a penalty at the lineout, which Richard West slots over, 3-3, 14 min’s

Bletchley’s kick is straight out so Newbury have a scrum on half way, scrum won Blues run the ball but don’t get far before they concede a penalty at the ruck, Bletchley kick to touch on Newbury’s 22, lineout won they attack the try line through their forwards and after several phases they are rewarded when they break down the Newbury defence to score a try which is successfully converted 10-3 19min’s

Bletchley are now playing the better rugby and put Newbury under pressure, Rob Drysdale off Ryan Davis on for his debut, several phases and penalties later Bletchley decide to take the 3 points 13-3 29 mins, to make matters worse Iain Herriott takes a team yellow

The remaining 10 minutes brings no reward for the Blues whose mistakes stop any flowing play, half time whistle goes and Newbury coaches now have a hard job to do.

Bletchley kick off the second half and are lucky not to get an instant yellow when their chaser takes out Ryan Davis in the air, the fact he just picks himself up and sets off on a great run down the field gets the Bletchley player off the hook, the ball is spread through the backs and the Blues get into Bletchley’s 22 before they are ushered into touch.
Bletchley manage to clear the danger when they are awarded a penalty, lineout won they attack but are forced into touch, Jack Steffen off Rob Drysdale on, Newbury lose their lineout allowing Bletchley to attack getting nearly up to the try line before luckily knocking on. Newbury win a free kick at the scrum, Ryan Davis takes quickly and runs at the Bletchley defence before releasing Rob Drysdale who makes a great run into the Bletchley 22 but the try scoring pass is forward letting Bletchley off the hook. Chris Rowland on for Tom Sanders Both teams are making mistakes and the play becomes disjointed and littered with mistakes and penalties. Bletchley are the first to put some phases together and are only stopped when Jamie Futcher stops the Bletchley player with a barging tackle which forces a knock on. Newbury clear the ball to touch from their scrum but this is short lived, Bletchley win the lineout and maul up field but give a way a scrum allowing Newbury to get the ball up field and into touch. Nathan Thomas on for George Robinson-Slater.
Bletchley win the lineout and attack but lose the ball allowing Newbury to again kick clear, Bletchley gather and this time they break through to score the try, 18-3, 70 min’s

Bletchley chase the restart and are awarded with a penalty, after some confusion the kick is deemed unsuccessful giving Newbury a 22 drop out. Newbury now manage to put several phases together and break through the Bletchley defence getting up to the try line, a couple of phases later Josh Love picks up at the base of a ruck and scores close to the posts Richard West drop kicking the conversion 18-10 78 mins.

Newbury cannot add to their score coming away without even a losing bonus point, Bletchley well worth the win.

Newbury players know this was a game they could have and should have won, it was one of those days when if a couple of their chances had been taken they would have won, instead mistakes ruled the day.

We need to quickly learn how the ref is running the game and stop giving away penalty after penalty.

We need to get back into gear and winning ways on Saturday against Buckingham, this will be a very difficult game as they are fighting against relegation

A big thanks to all the travelling support and young Ben the H2O officer
