Newbury A’s blow away Marlow III

Sat 21st Oct 3 pm KO - Wadworth 6X BBO Div 4 South

Newbury A’s keep up their winning streak in the league with a good home win in the gale force Brian weather

Newbury A’s with a team made up of old, young and new players keep up their 100% league record

Newbury A’s kick off this league game into the strong crosswind with uncontested scrums as Marlow cannot raise a front row, both teams take the first 15 mins to understand each other’s strengths and weakness’s plus how to play the strong wind, A’s are first to make the breakthrough when Nathan Thomas sets off on one of his destructive runs shoving the Marlow defence out of his way, A’s manage to keep the ball and take play into Marlow’s 22 after several phase’s Paddy Byrne crashes through the Marlow defence to score wide out the conversion is wide, 5-0 20 mins

The Marlow response is immediate and within a couple of minutes they have taken the lead with a well worked try and conversion 5-7 22 mins

A’s have the better of the next 15 mins but the windy conditions is causing both teams to make mistakes and the play is very stop start, again A’s break the mould and some good attacking play results with Newbury A’s scoring their second try through Alex Greenhalgh when he crashes through the Marlow defence to score his first try in only his second game 10-7 half time

Marlow kick off the second half, A’s knock on but make amends when they regather possession, Nathan Thomas makes another destructive run before the ball is spread through hands for Duncan Golby Barr to score under the posts, Yann Cullen converts 17-7

Both teams try playing a kicking game over the next 5 mins but get nowhere, the wind is too strong for Marlow to get in a kick that gives them any advantage, A.s again are the first to break the dead lock when they get the ball out wide on the left allowing Duncan Goby Barr to hare down the touchline to out sprint the Marlow defence and score his second and the bonus point try, the long conversion is blown wide 22-7

Play is held up for an injury to Olly Hicks

Marlow’s restart kick is returned by Newbury A’s and a great chase by Dan West forces the mistake but Marlow manage to hold on, Newbury have a scrum but lose it to a determined Marlow squad who launch an attack from inside their own 22 and get through the A’s tackling to score a good try and they kick the conversion 22-12

A’s restart and when Marlow knock on A’s are quickly back on the score sheet when after a good passage of attacking play, good run from Tom Birch and Paddy Byrne, George Stevens makes the break and is over to score close to the posts Yann Cullen converts 29-12

A’s are now playing the better rugby and after some mistakes brought about by the strong wind James Spillings makes amends for one of the strangest forward passes seen !! a back-hand flip which went behind him and forwards, by breaking through Marlow’s defenders to score a great solo try under the posts Yann Cullen converts 36-12

Straight from the restart another good Tom Birch run sets the A’s off and they are soon well in Marlow’s half before George Stevens out runs the defenders to score his second try Yann Cullen converts 43-12 and full time.

A great squad performance by young and old in front of quite a big crowd, good to see some of the Colts playing and showing what they can do in the senior ranks, also good to see Brian Trott the senior playing staying on for 60+ minutes
