WINDOSR III v NEWBURY A – 12th January 2019
Final Score: Windsor 3 v 63 Newbury
Despite not having a front row at 10:30pm on Friday evening, Newbury A’s managed to field a competitive side against Windsor away from home with a special mention going to Alex Weekes who stepped up last minute and put a shift in at loose head prop for the club. Thank you, Alex.
The game started with Newbury playing against a strong wind and going behind by a penalty goal to trail 3-0 after 15 minutes. Newbury were creating momentum only to misplace the last pass and were constantly sent 50 metres back downfield into the 22. Sam Smalley broke tackle after tackle in a 50-metre burst and went past the fullback to score under the posts and Newbury were off the mark. After that, passes went to hand and the pack did a superb job creating momentum and working its way upfield for the backs to make the line breaks. 4 more tries followed in the first half to put the game beyond reach with a halftime score of 35-3 to Newbury. Tom Cole slotted all 5 conversions. First half tries went to Sam Smalley, Will Hutchins (2), Tom Cole and Tom Birch.
The second half started with Windsor playing some excellent rugby and controlling most of the possession against the wind for the first 20 mins with no scores until Tom Birch broke some tackles to go under the posts and Tom Cole converting. Newbury then opened up with some beautiful running rugby with everyone getting their hands on the ball, scoring 3 more tries to Will Hutchins (2) and Sam Smalley. 8 out of 9 tries going to the forwards but in no way was this a game full of rolling mauls and scrums. A fantastic open game of expansive rugby with everybody making great contributions and eventually getting the reward for some outstanding play. Tom Cole slotting 9 from 9 for 100% on the day.
Newbury A’s are up to 3rd in the league, even after conceding two games this season, and playing away at Buckingham is their next challenge before the International break kick in.
Congratulations to the A’s for another wonderful result and hopefully they’ll march on to the Buckingham game with confidence.
