Newbury A’s beat the weather to get a great victory against Buckingham

Newbury’s A team made up of several old boys, new members coming back to rugby and a few youngsters smashed their own highest points tally with an outstanding display against Buckingham III’s at home this weekend running out 13 tries to 1 winners with a final score of an astounding 85-5 to the home team.

Early exchanges and rustiness saw Newbury miss numerous try scoring opportunities before Jon Grieve went bumping through tackles to score. 5 more first half tries came through George Robinson-Slater, Harry Stevens, Duncan Golby-Barr, another from Jon Grieve and new cap Alex Hawthorn.

The second half started with Buckingham applying significant pressure to the home side, rucking their way upfield and some ill-discipline had Newbury pinned back in their own half for long periods until another new cap, 18 year old Seth Grieve, burst through some tackles and ran through to score. Some wonderful handling, belying the wet and muddy conditions followed and 6 further tries were scored through George Stevens (2), Tom Cole, George Robinson-Slater and Josh Harris (2). A late consolation try from Buckingham was not enough to take the shine off an outstanding win for Newbury’s third senior team and keeps them in 3rd place in the league hunting for promotion to BBO2. Tom Cole kicked 9 conversions with the other going to Josh Harris.

Next game is away to Maidenhead this coming weekend before the international break.
