A's produce some exhilarating rugby in their defeat at Sonning

What's in a debut. Jeremy Guscott and Boris Becker know all about them. Guscott made a successful debut in an England rugby shirt scoring three tries against Romania in 1989. Becker won Wimbledon on debut at 17 in 1985. Great sportsmen, great competitors both who went on to have stellar sporting carers. But even at more modest sporting levels some individuals make impressive debuts and so it was at Rams on Saturday when Ted Dyer produced a man of the match performance, winning a number of line outs against the throw and scoring a try. Yet another young colt who is gong to a make a successful transition to senior rugby. He was helped by a fantastic team effort, particularly the strength and timing of his lifters and if A's hadn't played with only fourteen men for much of the game the outcome could well have been different.
Having to rearrange their front five an hour before kick off A's got off to a bright start and within 10 minutes Ed Gavin scored the team's first try, charging down an opposition kick and controlling the ball well to touch down between the posts. George Stevens kicked the conversion to take A's into a 7- 0 lead. There followed a period of pressure from Rams and some outstanding defence from A's. In fact the defensive effort was sustained throughout the half despite A's going down to 14 men 25 minutes into the game. During this period, Alex Harris made some strong runs, Rams were held up over the visitors' line and Ryan Davies secured a counter ruck. Towards the end of the first half, A's gained a foothold in Rams twenty two and after some sustained pressure Ted Dyer went over for A's second try, converted by George Stevens. A half time score of 14-0 to A's was no more than they deserved and they started the second half as they finished the first half, with another try, this time Will Osborne making a strong run to the line. George Stevens maintained his 100% conversion rate. 21 - 0 and things looking good. I guess Northampton had the same feeling at half time in Cardiff in the final of the Heineken Cup in 2011, leading 22-6, but in sport its never over 'til its over and Leinster's second half comeback resulted in them beating Northampton 33-22. Sobering thought and echoes of the Millennium Stadium 2011 at Sonning 2019. Indeed back Rams came, scoring a penalty try and four more in the last half hour of the game. It could have been more but for some continued staunch defending, and in particular one try saving tackle from Henry Nash. Going into the final five minutes A's were 21-33 down but showed great character in scoring the final try of the game, a sublimely weighted and angled pass from captain Neil Owen, who led from the front all afternoon, putting George Stevens in to secure a try bonus point for the team. Duncan Craigen kicked the conversion. This made George's contribution 14 points and well done to him. Prominent throughout were Ed Gavin and Fraser Carr and all the players whilst disappointed with the result can feel proud of the way they played. Well done to all.
A's next game is home against Reading III on 14th December, where they share the billing with Blues who entertain Brixham that day. For those not indulging in lunch try to get along early to give A's some support. The players I know would appreciate as much support as possible that day.
