Newbury knew what was wrong and changed their play immediately. The forward pack took total control destroying Reading in the scrum and line outs and the effort paid off with a try. Newbury were now getting into their stride and moving the ball well between the forwards and backs playing the game to Reading’s weaknesses. An unfortunate twist and turn by James Ludlow resulted in him hitting the deck clutching his knee (and knocking the ball on! We all hope the operation goes well and speedy recovery). The pressure continued resulting a further converted try before half time.
The second half continued in the same fashion with the forwards dominating the game rumbling the ball over the line from a rolling maul allowing to place the ball over the line.
By now it was clear that Reading were starting to tire under all the pressure which allowed the backs to come into the game some more. Some excellent hands created an overlap ending in Will Smith scoring in the corner.
Reading didn’t give up and applied pressure to our backs resulting in their second try.
It was a well fought game and Newbury showed great composure and experience to turn the game in their favour. The impetus has been set and needs to be carried into the next game against Slough – another tough fixture!
