Bracknell started the brightest by breaking through the Newbury line straight from the kick off and a penalty (tackler not releasing) was duly dispatched by the Bracknell 10. This seemed to wake Newbury up, who surged up field and after a great rolling maul by the forwards set up a try for the Winger Chris Burney. With Newbury playing ‘up field’ first half, Bracknell capitalised on a dog-legged defence to score two well taken tries. Again, this sparked Newbury into life and some determined loose play by Nigel Cripps and Ally Carter, gave the Mason brothers a solid platform to work from and create opportunities for Jamie Wallace, Jimmy Spillings and Dave Hancock to work down the middle.
Throughout the game, both teams were guilty of infringements and this tested the referee’s patience who by the send half, had enough and produced a total of 4 yellow cards. Newbury gradually pulled themselves out of the mud and starting holding their own with some clever tactical kicking from the Newbury backline. This spurred the Newbury forwards on and they were rewarded with tries from two attacking lineouts, secured by Jamie Bull. Stu Codling, Nelly Crowther and Rob Coster all helping driving the play forward. The game was wrapped up by a powerful run and try by Ally Carter, reaching over the line to score. A physical battle for both teams but the 19 players from Newbury happy with the end result away from home.
Conversions and Penalty converted by Jamie Wallace.
