Newbury A’s kicked off their BBO Div 4 South league with a convincing win at Tadley III’s

Newbury A’s travelled to Tadley for their first game of the season in BB&O 4 and immediately opening the scoring when Tadley’s kick off was caught and swiftly moved out to wing Tristan Telford who used his electrifying pace to go round the defenders and score under the posts with Richard Johnston converting.
Fearing the pace of the Newbury back line Tadley kept the ball with their strong set of forward although most of the play was in their half. The deadlock was broken when Daine Hammond breached the Tadley defence linking with Jamie Motherwell, Richard Johnston and Steve Denner who stepped several defenders to score under the posts. Richard Johnston converting.
Tadley once again kept the ball tight and were rewarded by scoring an unconverted try to bring the score 5 -14. Newbury soon responded with two quick tries one when Drew Mansbridge found a gap between the defending centers passing to Steve Denner to score and the second when James Allen stole the ball making ground before giving a scoring passing to Tristan Telford, Richard Johnston added the conversions. Tadley made the best of several penalties given away by Newbury scoring wide out to give a halftime score of 10 – 28

The second half saw Tadley using their bigger pack to put Newbury under pressure in their 22 and despite strong defending Tadley scored an unconverted try. Buoyed with tries either side of the break Tadley’s forwards continued to pound Newbury’s goal line but they defended well and were able to steal the ball with Richard Johnston running the whole length of the pitch to score. Newbury continued the scoring with 3 quick tries from James Allen, Tristan Telford, and Jamie Motherwell. Richard Johnston adding two conversions.
The second half finishes as the first with Tadley camped on Newbury’s line scoring a fourth try from a quick penalty, the conversion giving a final score of 22 - 52
