Second time lucky?

Sunday 18th January 2015
Newbury U18 Colts v Maidenhead U18 Colts
On Sunday Newbury welcomed Maidenhead to Monks Lane for the return fixture in Division One of the BBO League. The first match last September left Newbury on the wrong end of a 0-50 score line and a hard afternoon was anticipated for the young Blues.
The match kicked off in heavy conditions and it was evident to see that Maidenhead had brought their powerful pack of forwards with them and were intent on bursting through the Newbury defence before releasing their backs. However the first points went to the home side, when Ollie Cooper slotted a penalty following a lineout. For the next 20 minutes Newbury came under intense pressure and conceded 3 tries in quick succession, leaving the score at 3-15 after 30 minutes and an ominous feeling of déjà vu hung over the ground.
However, the Newbury side have come a long way in the last few months and refused to back down. Through tenacious tackling and defence Newbury forced themselves back into the Maidenhead half. Alex Heed was lost to the cause after charging down a clearance kick with his face which meant he could take no further part in the match. That moment typified Newbury for the rest of the match who pressed and harried the heavier Maidenhead side. Shortly before half time, George Anderson burrowed over to make the score 8-15 at half time.
The second half started as the first half finished with Newbury gaining ground through tenacious play with Maidenhead coming back through their ball carriers. Following a bit of back chat to the referee by Newbury, Maidenhead were awarded a penalty which they chose to kick making the score 8-18.
With the visitors slowing, Newbury kept up the intensity and were rewarded when Cameron Golby-Barr crossed the line in the corner. The match resumed and Newbury pressed hard but were repelled. Then followed an outrageous kick from James Lewis that landed in the Maidenhead in goal area and somehow, someone (?) from Newbury touched down to score. 18-18 with conversion to come, unfortunately the kick went wide and the scores stayed tied.
