Colts Don't have the Blues....

Sunday 8th March 2015
Newbury U18 v Chew Magna U18 - National Colts KO Plate Cup - 5th Round
Result: Newbury 34 - Chew Magna 17
Newbury Colts Progress in the National KO Cup
Newbury took to the pitch in the 5th Round of the National Colts KO Cup (Plate) against a determined and powerful Chew side from south of Bristol. The match was initially due to be played at Chew 2 weeks earlier, but a torrential downpour put paid to the first attempt. The Newbury side had a few positional changes, most noticeably Adam Foster switching to inside centre from his normal 2nd row berth.
Chew stole the early initiative and ran hard at the Newbury defence, before breaching the try line after about 10 minutes. Newbury picked up their game from that point on and competed hard. George Bicknell, new in at fly half, controlled the game well out of hand and with the boot and was instrumental in Newbury’s first try. A kick over the top from a strong forward drive bounced in Chew’s 22, with Dylan Stewart on hand to compete for the ball and score.
Confidence began to rise and a midfield break by George Bicknell, led to Ollie Copper gathering the ball and racing down the left flank before ending under the posts to score and make his own conversion easier. Newbury were rewarded again shortly afterwards with a penalty for offside in the midfield. The half time score was 15 -5 to Newbury.
Newbury went in to the 2nd half against the wind, but with scrum, lineout and defensive work functioning well they contained Chew and made progress of their own. From a catch and drive on the Chew 22, Newbury controlled the ball at the back of the maul and fed Scott Cullen who broke free and scored, the conversion was successful. 22-5 and going well, but not over. Then followed a series of tries and counter tries.
Chew were next to score through their strong running backs but their conversion went wide. Newbury forwards followed up with an attack down the left, before the ball going through the hands to Ollie Cooper who again rounded his man and glided over the ground to score.
Not overcome and definitely not out of the game, Chew came back through the midfield and after strong defensive play on their own line, Newbury conceded a try close in which was converted by Chew. Time for one more Newbury attack down the left which ended with a penalty being awarded. Kick for touch or run were the options? Newbury ran and recycled quick ball which again ended in Ollie Cooper’s hands with the same result as 10 minutes earlier. Final score Newbury 34 - Chew 17 and now a road trip to Dartfordians, who await next Sunday in the quarter final of this National Competition.
This side has made tremendous progress from this season from a humbling first match. The team possesses excellent players, but today’s victory was much more about the team being better than the sum of its individual parts. Well done and now on to next week
