Young Blues Battle On

Sunday 1st February 2015
Newbury U18 v Cleve U18 - National Colts KO Cup
On Sunday Newbury took to the pitch in the 4th Round of the National Colts KO Cup (Plate) against a determined Cleve side from Bristol. As the rounds tick by, the opposition are naturally getting stronger and Cleve were always going to be a challenge for the young Newbury side.
Cleve stole the early initiative and were awarded a penalty when Newbury transgressed at a ruck in front of the home posts, 0-3 to the visitors. The two sides then battled hard and neither gave ground willingly. Newbury played into the Cleve half and threw in at a shortened line out on the 22. The ball was driven up hard in the mid field before being switching back to the touchline, Max Clementson then took advantage of a stretched defensive line and burst through to score. Soon after, Newbury’s top try scorer, Ollie Cooper had to leave the field injured, time for plan B?
However next over the try line were Cleve, bringing the score to 5-8. Shortly after the restart Newbury put in a good passage of support play that led to George Anderson heading to the line, inches from the score the purposeful offload to Ollie Nunn failed to stick and the points went begging. With the try line close, Newbury kept up the pressure and were rewarded when Dylan Stewart emerged from a strongly contested ruck on the Cleve line with a try. Jordan Ruddock converted to make the half-time score 12-8 to Newbury.
The 2nd half continued in a similar fashion. Newbury were first on to the score sheet when Cameron Golby- Barr received the ball in the mid field and powered his way through the Cleve defensive line to score under the posts, the conversion took the score to 19-8.
Newbury continued to press and pressurised Cleve in their 22, Scott Cullen charged down a clearance kick for Dylan to respond quickest to the loose ball to pick up his 2nd try of the afternoon. Cleve were not out of the game and came back at Newbury to score their 2nd try, 24-13 with 10 minutes to play.
With a Cleve player in the sin bin, Newbury took advantage of their numerical advantage and scored a well worked 2nd try for Cameron in Blues Corner. The conversion went amiss, but Newbury were home and can look forward to their next round. Final score - Newbury the winners 29-13.
