Newbury U18 Colts v Chippenham U18 Colts
On Sunday Newbury welcomed Chippenham to Monks Lane for a keenly awaited friendly fixture. The track record for both sides this season had been similar but with little overlap in fixtures the outcome was impossible to predict.
Newbury kicked off with benefit of a strong wind and were content on probing the Chippenham defensive line with running play rather than kicking for position. Chippenham with a talented back line ran hard at Newbury and a stale mate ensued for most of the first half. The only score at half time was a Newbury penalty, leaving the half time score 3-0 with Newbury playing into the wind in the second half.
The whistle blew for the second half and then the match really started. What followed directly from the kick off was probably the best team score made by these players in their time with the Club. Max Clementson took the restart and stormed hard into the ongoing Chippenham team, he timed his offload to Dylan Stewart who linked with the backs to set Ollie Cooper upfield. On the Chippenham 22 he offloaded to George Anderson who linked again with Dylan before he passed the ball to Max to finish what he had started, outstanding - and on film!
The tone for adventure and support play was now set for the afternoon. Although the next score came from sustained pressure and harrying from Newbury in defence. From a charge down and determined chasing Newbury pressed forward and neat support play put the ball into Ollie Nunn’s hands who scored the second try.
Shortly thereafter, Ollie Cooper set the field alight with a Guscottesque run from his own half that sliced open the Chippenham defence and let to a try under the posts which after drawing breath he converted.
Not to be outdone, the Chippenham backs took the last scores of the match with two well worked tries in the corner. The final score was Newbury 22, Chippenham 10.
