For the first round of the National Colts Cup, Newbury were drawn against Winscombe, who travelled up to Monks Lane from Somerset. The sides had not played each other in recent memory, so before the kick off both sides were wondering how the match would go.

Despite their bus trip, Winscombe started the brightest, with their bruising centre making inroads into the Newbury midfield and from an ensuing ruck they burst through to score under the posts with the conversion to follow. Newbury were shaken into action and started to get into the game and make headway against a determined visiting side. Newbury's first try came from a lineout peel, gathered by the excellent Dylan Stewart and finished off by Alex Heed. The second try came from Newbury pressing the Winscombe defence, leading to a turn over from which winger Toby Wilkinson scored. At half-time Newbury had a tight 10-7 lead.

The second half started with a bang as fantastic team play resulted in first hooker George Anderson bursting over to score followed shortly after by centre George Bicknell finishing off a great team score. Newbury were now 20-6 up but the match was far from over as Winscombe fought back. Through the howitzer like boot of their centre they slotted 3 penalties in quick succession, 20-16 with about 10 minutes to play.

Not to be undone, Newbury pressed the accelerator once again and were rewarded with 2 further tries in "Blues Corner", the first by Jordan Ruddock which he duly converted and the second by the unstoppable 2nd Row, Adam Foster. Match over, Newbury the victors 32-16. The side have made great strides in the last few weeks and look forward to the visit of Redingensians next Sunday
