Newbury Colts v Bracknell Colts
On Sunday, Newbury took on Bracknell Colts in a non League fixture that promised to be a very competitive encounter and so it turned out to be.
Newbury started the brighter and in the early stages played the game in Bracknell’s half, but were unable to capitalise on early territory. As the half progressed, Bracknell’s game grew on the back of a powerful scrum and the tide turned their way.
Newbury found themselves under heavy pressure and went down to 14 men when Evan Calvert was deemed to have collapsed an advancing maul. But for the remaining 10 minutes of the half they gave their all to hold Bracknell out. That defensive period had a significant impact on the match. Half time 0-0.
As the second half resumed Newbury came out an inspired side and took Bracknell on in all aspects of the game. Their first score came when new recruit, Alex Bancroft finished some good team play to reach out over the line and slam the ball down for a try. Thereafter Newbury were in the ascendancy and continued to press Bracknell hard.
Next to score was Lewis Rawlings who took the ball at pace and depth from a ruck and was unstoppable. Unfortunately in the act of scoring a Bracknell player picked up a shoulder injury that led to the teams moving up to pitch 4 ........................temporarily. Thankfully the injured player got to his feet and play resumed again on the main pitch when Ollie Black slotted his conversion from wide on the left.
Newbury kept up the momentum and were rewarded with their third try, when Cameron Golby-Barr took the outside line to cross in Blues Corner. This time from the RHS, Ollie stepped forward and converted the try, to leave the result Newbury Colts 19 - Bracknell Colts 0.
