The young Newbury Blues faced a stern challenge from a powerful Supermarine side who had made the short journey from Swindon to Monks Lane. The fixture had been billed as something of a development afternoon, but funny enough, soon evolved into a full on match, enjoyed by all those in the crowd.
Again Newbury fired out of the blocks and pushed back Marine from the kick off, they cleared their lines and headed up field into the Newbury half but were thwarted in mid field by Ollie Cooper. Soon after Newbury attacked the Marine line and Adam Foster scored under the posts following some neat interchanges between backs and forwards. From then on the match took on an absorbing, attritional character with Marine fighting hard through their forwards only to be rebuffed time and time again by the Newbury defence and by some astute positional kicking from James Lewis. At half-time Newbury lead 7-0.
The 2nd half started much as the first ended with both teams determined not to buckle. But as the half progressed the Newbury cohesion and teamwork start to bear dividends, James Lewis was first to score. Following a drive towards the Marine line he timed his run perfectly from a Newbury ruck and sped through the defence to score. With their tails up, and spotting gaps in the Marine defence, Newbury pressed on. Next to score was Jordan Ruddock who finished off some fine team play to cross the line. This was soon followed by lock Peter Fairnington, who scored out wide after good driving play from a lineout. With the match drawing to a close Newbury had one last press to the Marine line; George Anderson went close before Zach Timms burrowed over the line. His celebration was memorable to those who saw it and reflected both his personal satisfaction in scoring as well as finishing off a fine afternoon's work from Newbury. With 2 conversions to add from Ollie Cooper, the final score was Newbury 29 -Supermarine 0.
