An impressive display by Newbury Ladies sees them reach the final eight in the intermediate cup competition

Monks Lane played host to Newbury Ladies last sixteen game in the Women’s intermediate cup this Sunday. Facing an unseen opposition, the Blues focussed on playing their own fast paced game, and combined with their firm defence, they dominated both possession and territory for most of the encounter.

The Blues set piece looked dangerous early on, and from an opposition scrum in Elthamian’s twenty-two the Blues drive forced the turnover, allowing Number eight and forward of the match Kat Smith to draw in the back row, before releasing the backs to allow outside centre Sophie Dowson to touch down.

Newbury found themselves camped in the oppositions half, and with intense pressure at the breakdown from flanker Hannah Ward and prop Lucy Mercer, Elthamians began to concede penalties.

Blues opted to maintain pressure on the scoreboard, and, given the option to twice kick for the posts, Chloe Hunt made sure of the six points.

The fast-paced nature of the game soon drew penalties on both sides, and keen to escape their own half, Elthamians choice to kick for territory was their only viable option. Unfortunately, Newbury’s defensive line out was also in fine form, turning over the majority of the ball.

Newbury’s second try came as a result of defensive pressure driving the opposition backwards. Excellent work at the breakdown by Ward won the turnover before the ball found the hands of scrum half Holt who sped her way to the corner, Chloe Hunt adding the extras.

Elthamians rallied just before half time. Their longest period of possession and territory of the game saw them using their forwards to drive themselves up the pitch to within five metres. Blues put up a solid defence, but eventually the ball was spun wide for the run in at the corner.

Despite the Blues again dominating possession, and the boot of back of the match Meg Mason constantly gaining territory, it was half way through the second half before the next points were scored.

Following an Elthamians kick, fullback Lizzie Harris gathered, and set of at pace before offloading to Holt who found speedster Jemma Thripp on her outside. Thripp running the 70 metres to touch down. Chloe Hunt rounding off her successful afternoon with the boot by adding the conversion.

It was the opposition who were to have the last say of the match, again driving with forwards before a meandering run by their powerful centre just evaded the Blues tacklers.

Newbury now move on to the quarter finals, where they will face their fellow league competitors Cullompton away on February 17th.
