A splendid sunny Sunday at Basingstoke

It was a bright sunny morning (something of a novelty for all of us) when we arrived at Basingstoke where there was a very warm welcome awaiting the U7s. Spurred on by the sunshine no doubt and some very enthusiastic coaches all the players got stuck into some new training drills and games, they picked up the rules and games very quickly which was brilliant to see.

The players were then put into “Barbarian” style teams with a mix of Basingstoke and Newbury on each team. All the players adapted well to playing alongside at least 2 others they had never met before never mind played with! It was extremely pleasing to see how all the players on both sides quickly formed real teams, helping each other, communicating with each other and selflessly passing the ball to each other when a teammates, regardless of their Club membership, was in a better position to score or make ground. Now that’s what Rugby is all about!

From the coaches perspective it was a great opportunity to see how and learn new games and techniques that will be incorporated into future training sessions. Especially the grid passing game. All the coaches were very proud of how easily our players picked up these new games even though some of them were quite complex! A great session that highlighted that the spirit of collaboration in rugby is very much alive for both players and coaches!
